his father teaches him how to be a ruthless, efficient career from a young age before he starts being eligible for the reaping, because his parents agreed that if they wanted a child they need to make sure to have it trained to be a career in the case it gets reaped. his father's father was like this with him as well. he starts learning quick, but his mother also teaches him not to want to be a part of the games, to have compassion, kindness, and be loving. his father doesn't realize he's actually setting him up to be "evil" but is just teaching him what he was taught, he actually didn't want to be or liked being a career but knew if he wanted to survive the games he had to. the mom is shot and killed by an assassin, who was hired by quentin's trainer because she was starting to get in his way--but he keeps trying to be what she taught him except he becomes flirty with both girls and guys in a desperate attempt to. he does this to find a new person to be caring with so they can fill the void she left, along with to keep her memory alive and alive within him. what she taught him is also the only thing that's keeping him together after her death.
