He doesn't really know when he decided to run.

He doesn't really know why, either.

Fourteen years old and he's pressing bunny ear laces in between his fingertips, bring it around town and under and pull. The rain pounds against his window, cheering him on as he studies his checklist and his backpack, hollowed eyes glancing over his belongings scattered around his room. A glass shatters downstairs and he winces, finally tuning into the choir of shouts and slams from the kitchen. 

That was a lie, he knows why he ran. 

The front door creaks as his fingertips wrap around the handle, screaming softly into the night and he pauses, listening to see if he was found. Three heartbeats later and he crumbles, slinking out the door into the storm and disappearing into the night. Tears shatter against his glass skin, fragile in the moonlight as he sprints away from it all, biting his lip just to let himself know he can still feel something.

"Hey!"

It's on the fourth block down that a man in white catches his scent and, eyes wide and fists clenched, he goes into a full on sprint towards the district fence, lungs cracking against his ribcage. Twenty, thirty feet and he feels the man's body slam into his own and they both go down, pavement grinding through his shirt and gashing his elbow. 

Fist to jaw, his head slams into the pavement and he crawls backwards from the man, stopping only when the barrel of a gun stares him down. Pitter patter, the rain slides down from matted hair as he shakes, finally breaking down and letting the tears flow down his cheeks. 

The man steps back, before kneeling down to eye level.

"Christ, Axyl. We have a lot to talk about."

"What?"
