Return of the Family Curse {Jinx Family}

Charm hadn’t seen Curse in quite a while. He’d been out of the house for much longer than she would have liked, since he’d moved out. Instead, Charm had been living with her other siblings without Curse. Hex, Spear, Pheonix, Dragon, Griffin and Serpent, the remaining siblings, all got on her nerves sometimes, but not all too often. She got along best with the other boys, aside from Hex, and in all honesty, she thought that Serpent was just a little brat. Though, she didn't tell her that. At least, not too often.

The only brunette girl in the Jinx family had gotten up early in the morning, as usual, so that she could go train at the District’s Career Gym, which was basically a small training center. She had a sword that she always used when she went there, bringing her own with her, instead of using the ones that were offered. It fit in her hand perfectly, and she was extremely accurate with it. Charm thought it was beautiful, and even polished the blade at night, which, as she had been told by at least one of her siblings, was a bit obsessive. She disagreed with that statement. Then again, there were a lot of times that she disagreed with things that her siblings and other people stated in order to criticize her.

She trained for about an hour at the Career Gym, and headed home around 8:30 in the morning, just in time to get there before Curse arrived. Most of her siblings slept in later than she did on a daily basis, so it wasn’t a surprise that some of them seemed exhausted when she got home, despite her being full of energy. Charm got herself a glass of water when she entered the family’s house, not thinking to take her shoes off, which her mother criticized her for. Rolling her eyes, the girl then took off her shoes, placing them by the door. She then flopped down into a chair to wait for Curse to enter the house. He’d be there soon, so she didn’t mind waiting. After all, he was one of her favorite siblings.

Curse Jinx

And for more than just an awkward get together with the random sibling here or there, but actually have been home. Packing up my studio is weird, knowing that I’ll most likely never be back. The long amount of time that I had spent here, it was my escape. What was I running from though; I never got my answer as I stare around the now empty brick room. The giant window from my old kitchen illuminates the dust in the air, drifting about with nothing to cling onto anymore. The bare hardwood still shows where the furniture once stood, the memories standing in its shadows. Maybe this wasn’t the place to get the answers that I needed, maybe which is why I’m going home. I sold off whatever furniture that I couldn’t fit into my old room, and packed away everything else away into boxes. Why does this feel so weird?


They’re my family, but at the same time I feel so estranged from them all. I haven’t been keeping up with my training like the rest of them. I only go to the gym to work out and even then I’ve been slacking, not going almost every day like I used to. I have become so accustomed to the lifestyle of being a working citizen that I forgotten how it felt to be training for something that almost barbaric. Not being in that mindset has allowed me to view these things in a different light. But I know when I move back in I’m going to be expected to regain that mindset and mentality of the training warrior, and not of the worker. It scares me knowing that my parents and my siblings will still be expecting that from me. But how do I go about changing myself back into that? I ponder all of this as I start to bring some of my boxes down the old factory stairs. I’ll miss this refurbished building, it has a nice, rustic charm to it all. I’ll miss the way that the old bricks caught the sunlight.


The sun is still high in the sky, dancing in sparkles off of the ocean surface. The ocean breeze is coming in softly as I finish loading the last of boxes, salt hanging heavily in the air. I lean against my buggy, taking in the salty breeze. My loose white tank and blue board shorts flow lightly with the breeze. At this point I am just stalling, not wanting to go back home, yet at the same time I feel so lucky to have this view every day. Maybe I am just over thinking this, but I still can’t ignore the knot forming in the pit of my stomach. Everything will be fine, won’t it? I am tempted to just not go back, find a nice little shack on the shoreline, live out the rest of my days in solidarity. I could be a nice little fisherman. As great as that sounds I probably shouldn’t be running away from my problems, as fantastic as that would be. It doesn’t help that I somehow managed to get the flu, even though I do not interact with anyone outside of my job, or outside of my building. My throat has been scratchy for a solid week now, my sinuses and chest are filled with mucus, and I barely have a voice left. This should make this little reunion even more fun. Great. Although the flu could be the cause of my upset stomach.


I finally climb into buggy, the knot still forming into my stomach, mostly because of nerves but it may be some slight illness to. Going back to the family house feels weird, it’s been too long since I’ve been back yet at the same time I have gotten used to not going back. Driving down the roads brings up old ghosts of memories that I’ve almost forgotten about. Memories that have lost almost all emotional attachment to them. It almost feels wrong for me to be coming back in this sort of manner. Yet here I am, pulling up in front of our house that somehow manages to hold the 10-12 of us that are in there on a random given day, about to walk back into the family dynamic. I grab a smaller box, and open the front door.


“Hello? Is anyone home?”

DRAGON JINX

The return of an older brother to the home would be an exciting event for most people, and it certainly was for Dragon. The twelve-year-old boy hadn't seen his older brother, Curse, in quite a while. Dragon began to wonder if he'd even seen Curse since he became of age for the Reaping. He honestly wasn't sure if he had or not. Regardless, he was glad that he'd get to see him now.

Dragon had awoken from his sleep abruptly out of excitement that morning. He had had a dream about Curse coming home, and now it was true. Curse was coming home today, and the young boy was ecstatic. Once he got out of his bed, he rushed downstairs, still in his pajamas in order to wait by the door for his brother's arrival. The boy's legs were bouncing and his body was shaking with excitement. Once he heard the front door open and Curse's voice asking if anyone was home, he quickly made his way over to the door to greet his older brother. On his way running over, he briefly tripped over a shoe that was near the front door, but caught himself before he could fall. The boy's face was reddened with embarrassment, but he didn't seem to think much of it, and ran over to his brother, hugging him around his midsection.

"Curse!" he said joyously. Then, he released his brother and looked up to him with a smile across his round face. "How have you been? Do you want something to eat? You should sit down. I can get you some food!" The words were quickly spilling out of the boy's mouth like a running faucet, and there didn't seem to be a way to stop the flow. Dragon was still shaking with happiness, and didn't seem to show any sign of stopping soon.

Then, Dragon briefly turned away from his brother to shout to the others. "Guys! Curse is home!"

Slowly, Charm strode into the room, covering her mouth as she yawned.

"Hey, Curse. How've you been?" she asked. To Dragon's surprise, she didn't seem as interested in her brother being there as she should have been. A confused look crossed the young boy's face for a moment, but it faded back into a smile when he remembered that Curse was behind him. He turned back around, grinning joyously at his older brother. He was so glad to see him that his face was almost beginning to get sore from the wide smile that was upon it.

NOTES ; I kind of added Charm's reaction into here a little bit so that I could keep things moving. I hope that's okay, since she is my character as well.
