NAVYA RHODES
Navya stared up at her unpainted ceiling while the heart beat monitor closest to her head beeped merrily. The ceiling - plain as it was - remained the one recognizable piece of the room. Everything else had been changed over the course of the last month: the stately bed swapped for a more manueverable hospital one, the furniture dragged out to make room for the machines shipped from Six, the quilts from her family exchanged for thin, easily disinfected sheets. She disliked all of it, but she didn't hate anything - except for the doctor.
He was technically attached to the Peacekeepers in Eleven, but when her condition had become known, he'd been assigned to the Rhodes. Assigned, when she had the best care in the district, thanks to her midwife cousins. Their care had been tender and natural; this doctor had her constantly hooked up to machines. Her bulging belly had so many straps and monitors that she could not move, even if she'd wanted to.
He threw his gloves into the sanitary trash can and then loomed over her, blocking her view of the ceiling. "Everything's progressing well today, Mrs. Rhodes."
She let out a breath she didn't know she'd be holding. A few spots danced at the edge of her vision. "Then help me stand."
"I'm sorry?"
"The reaping. It will be over by now and I want to wave to Harbinger as he passes."
"That's not possible."
Navya lifted a dark eyebrow. "Are things good today or are they not?"
"Good enough, considering. But you are still confined to bedrest. Any movement would be extremely risky and we wouldn't want that, would we?"
She did her best to fold her arms in protest, but with all of the wires and the unnatural size of her stomach and breasts, she ended up half choking herself. The doctor shook his head at her tantrum and went to confer with her family. At least she'd been allowed to keep her cousins close; every day after the Peacekeeper doctor left, she cross-checked his diagnosis with them. She kept telling herself she could survive his clinical examinations for a few months - if she made it that long.
As soon as the doctor departed, Vera ran into the room. For being so small, she was incredibly agile. She climbed into the hospital bed, mindful of the wires and IV line, and snuggled up close to her mother. Navya pet her dark hair and felt something loosen in her chest; even though Harbinger would be away for a month, she got to keep this small, rambunctious piece of him at home.
Outside, a chorus of cheers rattled her window. Navya crossed her legs and turned towards the sunshine, smiling sadly. "We'll miss you. Wave to Daddy," she encouraged her daughter. They waved, their shadows dancing over the blank ceiling.
