POPPY GREENSLADE
"Harry, please, it's okay," I cooed to my youngest son as he'd burst out into tears. He'd been eating and dropped a piece of food onto the floor. For some reason, this really upset the child. I couldn't understand why, but then again, it had been a long time since I was in the mind of a two-year-old, and I'd never been in the mind of a two-year-old boy. Perhaps the mind of a male child was significantly different than that of a female. I supposed I would never know.
The only person that seemed capable of calming down Harry was my other son, Colton. He was twelve years old, and had just survived his first reaping yesterday. It was scary enough when Terra started being eligible for the reaping. It was down right terrifying to have the chance of more than one of my children being reaped. In addition to that, with Terra and Colton being opposite genders, they had the slim yet still possible chance of being chosen together.
I thanked Colton for soothing Harry's emotions, and the little boy finished the rest of his food after that. It was hard for me, taking care of all of the kids on my own. Surprisingly, my husband, Harrison, who was turned into a tongueless avox for murdering our neighbor, was a bit better at understanding children than I was. Now, I had to rely on my instinct and the help of the children themselves to get me through it all. It's true that I could remarry if I found someone that I loved as much as I had loved Harrison. Although, I could never get myself to replace him, in the fear that something like what happened to him would happen again. I was not ready for history to repeat itself.
Once all three of my children had eaten their breakfast, I could finally get something for myself. I generally ate a rather small and simple breakfast, such as a piece of fruit, and that tradition carried into today. A single apple was all that I chose to consume for my morning meal, as I knew I didn't really have enough time for much else. I would have to be getting to work soon, and I also had to make sure that the kids were out the door and headed to school. My mind wandered just then, wondering how school was for Terra and Colton when the other students found out what their father had done, and what happened to him. I could imagine it wasn't the most pleasant time to be in a school environment, but they'd never told me anything.
Maybe I should have asked them, I thought to myself.
Not allowing myself to get distracted any further, I made sure the older two children had their school bags packed properly for the day, and that I got them out of the door on time. Once they had left, I tended to Harry until his babysitter showed up for the day. She was a few minutes late, but luckily, I was ready to head out the door as soon as she arrived. I let her in, and made sure she knew that Harry had already ate. Then, when I had the opportunity, I headed out the door for work.
I was almost late to my job that morning, which would not have been a good thing at all. My boss hated tardiness. If you were late by even a single minute, you'd be scolded, and it's likely that he'd dock your pay a bit for the day. I was glad that I was lucky enough not to have to endure that, since I was just on time to avoid it. The whole day, however, I was distracted. For some reason, all I could think about was Harrison. I had no idea how his life was in the Capitol as an avox servant. I didn't know how they treated him, or how he was fairing with having his gift of speech taken away so forcefully.
By the end of the day, when I headed home, I was exhausted. It wasn't even because of the amount of work I did. If anything, I didn't do as much as I usually did. Instead, I had tired myself out from worrying over what could possibly be happening to Harrison at any given moment. I wondered if he were worried about us in return, and I just wished I could see him again. As I entered the door to my small, cozy home, set down my work bag, and took off my shoes, I paid the babysitter as she left. Harry seemed to be in a surprisingly good mood for a small child who'd just spent a whole day without his mother. I picked him up into my arms and spoke softly to him.
"Do you miss daddy?" I asked him.
