Marina had just recently met Chloriphina, but they were friends, which meant there was no way that she was going to volunteer for the same Hunger Games as her. Even though there could be as many tributes as wanted to volunteer, judging by the amount of District Four tributes there were, Marina wasn't going to volunteer for that reason, either. There they we; two strikes that meant she didn’t want to volunteer. One more strike, and she was definitely out. Then, there it was; the third strike. Another girl that she knew just had two of her siblings volunteer, and she was devastated. Marina didn't want her own sister to feel that way if she had put herself forward like all of them did with an even smaller chance of winning than usual.
Though, after the reaping, when Marina went home, she locked herself in her room. She sobbed over her friend, knowing how unlikely it was that she would ever return. She thought about the fact that Blizzard O’Hana, Marina’s friend who ended up with two of her siblings volunteering, was probably feeling a similar thing, if not worse. The tears flowed from Marina’s eyes for about half of an hour, until one of her parents entered the room.
”Are you okay?” her father asked. His daughter shook her head ‘no’.
”What happened? Was it something at the reaping?” he questioned. She nodded her head ‘yes’ this time, but still couldn't get herself to speak any actual words.
”Was it one of your friends?” She nodded again. Her father sighed, and came over to sit next to her on her bed. The girl’s face was tear-stained and red, showing how obviously upset she was.
”Who was it?” he asked her.
Finally, Marina felt that she could speak.
”Lori,” she told him. A look of disappointment crossed her father’s face. He’d never met the girl, but he knew that she had treated Marina well, cheering her up with jokes when she was having a bad day.
”I see. I’m sorry, sweetie,” Mr. Summers told his eldest daughter. Immediately, she wrapped her arms around him in a hug and started crying heavily again.
”She volunteered, dad. Why would she leave me like that?” the girl’s shaky voice informed her rather calm and collected father.
”I don't know, honey. I wish I could tell you why, but I have no way of knowing. You know just as much as I do about why she would have done it, if not more, okay?” the man said, trying to calm his daughter’s distressed emotions.
”She needs to win. I want her back here in the District again. We haven’t known each other that long, but I really care about her,” the girl expressed. Her father nodded.
”I hope she comes home for you, okay, Marina? Just believe in her, and maybe she will.”
