Day Six Anthem

There is an expectation of devastation following the storm. With the ground turned red — petals and hearts bleeding out where they fell still — the garden itself is a shock to see. New blooms unfurl before your eyes. Pristine. White. Untouched by red. A long table is nestled amongst the flowers, seven overstuffed armchairs lined up on either side. Anyone arriving early might catch a glimpse of a massive, leafy tiger with a porcelain tea pot hooked between his teeth, pouring water into the cups laid out at each seat. A closer look reveals a different tea bag steeping at each place setting.

Party favors, pastries, and cakes are piled high all down the table. Baskets of freshly baked blueberry streusel muffins are tucked next to twelve-tiered platters of scones — everything from sweet cranberry orange to savory lemon-rosemary. Bowls of whipped cream and fresh fruit are scattered throughout jam jars and glass pitchers of golden maple syrup. Stacks of waffles steam in the crisp morning air beside chocolate eclairs, strawberry cream turnovers, and flaky almond croissants. There are danishes and beignets, raspberry cream cheese pinwheels and peach fritters. Tarts, cannolis, madeleines, churros with cups of chocolate, and cream puffs shaped like swans compete for attention with a chocolate hazelnut crepe cake so tall that you have to wonder if it's using the same mechanic as the mansion stairs to defy gravity. Everything seems to be dusted in powdered sugar, drizzled with icing, or topped with dollops of cream.

This does appear to be a feast... but perhaps of a more literal sort. You are cordially invited to lay your weapons down, have a seat, and take it easy. Bask in the sunshine and enjoy a peaceful day of rest. Sip Tea. Eat cake. Try not to feel awkward if you catch your enemy's eye from across the table — blood only needs to be drawn today if you demand it.
