District Eleven
District Eleven
It was utterly disturbing how familiar the creaks of this stage had become to Kirito. How often the sun has shone over his skin while he stood here. But today he would not read cards or a paper, but he would speak to them as the people they were, the people most important to him.
"To begin, I suppose I'll pick up on a point my fellow candidate Jimmy kindly pointed out. As you all know I am in fact a victor, but I am not merely a title. Are all of us the same, are we our own species? Just to make it certain the answer is no if you're wondering." Kirito let a soft laugh stir through the microphone before continuing more seriously. "Now, even though I'm a victor I was a boy born and raised in District Eleven first. I know first hand the suffering we all face in this District and the tragedies that come from it. I not only spent endless nights shuddering and starving in the cold of my family's poorly constructed home, but I lost my own Father to the horrors of our conditions. My own Mother fell ill putting all the burdens on my brother and I, and the sad fact is that this is the life most of us live. We work terrible hours, lose family members everyday, and send our children to bed with starving stomachs. Now I might be a victor sure, but I am a man of District Eleven first, one who won't settle until I see its current conditions fixed."
Pause.
"From the moment I stepped foot into that arena I made a decision. I chose from that point on to fight for District Eleven and all the people I knew were still suffering along side me. I chose to pick up that sword and fight because you all deserve better. And when I won you all welcomed me home with cheers and open arms, why? It wasn't just for the food or the money, it was because of your own was coming back home. That's the kind of community we are, we love each other as though a family. Through our suffering we have become so much stronger, so I chose to continue to fight when I returned. I opened my house as a medical center to treat any who need it, I joined and served on the Mayor's council to push agendas for the betterment of everyone here, and I gave away money, clothes, and any supplies I could to help anyone I could. I did it all not because I'm a victor, but because I have the core of a District Eleven citizen. I did it all because you all share the very same core."
Pause.
"Now, I know very well actions speak far louder than words, so I will share with you all my plans to implement change. The corner stone of my plans is a complete rework of our agricultural system. I want to make our shifts shorter hours and increase the amount of times new workers are rotated in. By doing so we will all be working fresher, more well rested, and in less danger of heat strokes or exhaustion. Furthermore with such new levels of energy and knowing there are shorter hours, I am confident we won't just meet the ever growing Capitol quotas, but surpass them. Also by doing this I am certain I can arrange the Capitol to increase our wages for all the hard work, as well as put the new money towards programs which drastically need it. Programs such as training better medical personnel and improving the buildings of our District which we may love but we know are very close to collapse. But most importantly, these shorter hours and healthier lives will give our children more time with their parents, and more time in school instead of working, and as a Father myself I know that's all I want. So there it is, I might be young and I victor, but I have the experience and the maturity of a man triple my age. I know how the Capitol works very well, I know the nature of suffering very well, and I know you all deserve a voice and change in this new District. So, I ask you all: Please give me this opportunity to continue to fight for District Eleven. Thank you."
