This is one of Calliope's better ideas, but that doesn't stop her from feeling stupid and ridiculous as she knocks on the door. She hasn't ever really been much of a people person - although that certainly begs the larger question of why she's running for mayor instead of why she's standing on the front stoop of a group home for orphans whose families burned away with their former homes. This sounded like a good place to find kids who are as pissed at the world as she is and so they must be her people. People whose lives she wants to better in place of her own.

If she'd ever studied mental health, she's sure she'd immediately be declared a shit show, just for this idea alone. That thought isn't enough to make her turn away and so she knocks. When the door opens she doesn't give herself time to stutter or stall, immediately extending her hand in introduction. "Hi. My name is Calliope Bloom. I'm running for mayor and I'm here to ask you: What pisses you off?"

Technically, the nurses are supposed to answer the door when someone knocks. But I'm far too interested to let them get there first. Things are boring here, with latched windows and locked doors and halls we're not supposed to walk through. This door, however, is never locked. The keyhole rusted over ages ago. A door is rather boring if it's not locked, but this is still a door, it still holds some possibility on the other side, and that excites me.

Whoever's on the other side has interrupted a game of hide-from-the-nurses, but I'd rather see who it is than continue playing. The other children are still hiding. They know I'll answer it, that perhaps the nurses' attention will be turned to me instead of them. A smile pulls at my lips, amused by the thought. I was never bothered by the name scapegoat. I always thought it suited me rather well.

She's tall, dark hair and dark eyes, not at all interesting. I cross my arms and lean against the door frame. I know who she is. I've seen her before, interviewed by the Capitol, and now running for mayor. Put in the spotlight by her brother. Ridiculous, I think, since personally I'd rather give credit to myself than anyone else.

In response to her question, I make a soft humming noise, thinking it over. I can hear one of the younger children around the corner, pulled out from his hiding place.

"Well, let me see here..." I start, then begin counting off on my fingers, "Locked doors. Rules. Early birds. Pea soup. Clocks. Burnt toast. Anything not flammable." I pause, scan my fingers (seven of witch are now sticking up in the air), then glance up and smile politely. "Shall I continue?"

It’s not the kind of list anyone makes laws about, but it’s certainly honest and Callie prefers that. One corner of her mouth hooks up in amusement as the girl in front of her ticks her fingers up one after another. Locked doors. Rules. Early birds. The mayoral meth cook has come to appreciate a good locked door, campaigns on the idea of making new rules for everyone, and has always been the kind of person who starts her day annoyingly early… if she gets to sleep at all. Pea soup. That one does sound pretty terrible, to be fair. Clocks. Burnt toast. Anything not flammable. A curious list to be sure, yet somehow difficult to argue with.

“Sounds terrible,” it’s not a lie, even if she’s part of the problem, “Bring it on, anything you’ve got.” She means it. She’s not standing here because she thinks this — or anything else in life — is easy. “That sucks and I can’t do anything about any of it, except maybe give you a can of lighter fluid for your birthday.” Rummaging around in her pockets, she finds an empty carton of cigarettes and a lighter that’s not long for this world. Tossing the latter at the girl, she shrugs. “Unless that’ll help?”

"Sounds terrible."

You bet your buttons it does. I snicker silently at the thought.

"That sucks and I can’t do anything about any of it, except maybe give you a can of lighter fluid for your birthday."

I can practical feel my eyes light up with interest. My back straightens, quite suddenly paying far more attention than I was a few seconds ago. Is she serious? No one brings me gifts on my birthday, let alone a can of lighter fluid. Then again, that might be a good thing, since I'd likely explode from excitement if anyone ever did. But perhaps exploding would give them all a good show.

"Unless that'll help?"

I've lost focus again, and I'm caught off guard when she tosses something at me. I snap back just in time to catch it clumisly between my palms. I turn it over, fingers running over the object, eyes widened by fascination. I flick the switch and my smile broadens when a tiny flame dances close to my skin. I look over the tip of it and catch her eye.

"I just might hold you to that." I tilt my head slightly and nod in the direction of her pocket. "Mind if I take one of those cigarettes?"
