Grandpa always tells me that my Mom was an idiot for naming me Ellington.
("Little boys aren't named Ellie.")
I just smile and nod, agree as I push him up and down the streets in his wheelchair. I listen to the same stories, same complaints, same broken tunes every single morning.
Some days he's a victor cast down from the Victor's Village because he planned out a rebellion against President Snow. Other days he's a drug dealer in debt because his side hoe robbed him for everything he had. He's got a head full of stories; it doesn't really matter that they aren't his.
("I told her to name you Andrew, like your father.")
It's been a long time since he's been able to remember that his son killed his daughter-in-law in a drunken rage. I was three years old; I don't remember her. And I've only ever heard the story about my Dad once. He'll be locked away until he's old and shriveled. And that's fine by me.
My grandpa raised me. He raised me to be kind, to be smart, to be respectful—I know he always felt guilty about how his son turned out. I know he blames himself for how I've grown up without parents, for his daughter-in-law's death.
("With a name like Ellie you gotta work twice as hard since no one will ever take you seriously.")
Before my grandpa's mind started going he was quiet. He taught me how to read, how to cook, let me fall asleep in his lap as he told me stories about swashbucklers and gladiators and queens. I only ever swung a sword so I could imagine I was in another story, one far more exciting than my own.
A story that always finished with a happy ending.
("Hey kid, what's your name again?")
