victor (it’s finally happened!) is coming home. She’d followed him intently
during the Games, watching the tender boy grow into a rugged man without somehow
ever losing the heart he held within himself.
They say that animals are the best judges of character, and
as Nat watches Teddy make his way to victory, she knows that no truer words
have ever been spoken. The good-hearted citizen of her district is surrounded
by a wide variety of mutts, one on his shoulder, another in his pocket, but all
sticking close to him. One day, they will make their way to District Six, and
she’ll be there, waiting. As fascinating as it will be to meet the boy wonder
himself, Nat finds herself tapping her fingers in anticipation of meeting the
cute little creatures accompanying him.
Her journals are filled with her observations of the creatures
of District Six, of the limited understanding she has of the Capital mutts’
workings. Never before has Nat had the opportunity to see a specimen from an
actual arena in the flesh. She can picture it now – attaching the pocket whale
to various weights to see how buoyant and strong it is, monitoring the koalas
sleeping and eating patterns to determine how it lives. Most of all though, she
wishes to observe the victor’s reactions to the world around him. Nat has a
special book just for human behavior with a section laid out specifically for
the young Teddy Ursa. Its pages lie open near her, waiting for her pen’s ink to
fill it with notable findings.
His victory tour will be at an end soon, and once that
happens, his mind will be ripe for her picking. She smiles as she thinks of
what’s in store. “Oh Teddy, we’re going to do such good work together.”
