Nonphysicals and ideas had drowned Tobias LaChance a thousand times in his sleep. Dreams and nightmares blurred together, and he often woke up not knowing what to call the visions he saw in his dead. Dead people smiling at him, saying farewell. Brothers he never got to meet walking past his on the street, nodding to him with a smile.
They did not make him feel bad, necessarily, but they did not make him feel good, either. He'd read that dreams represented a person's inner self, though, so he supposed it made sense.
He rolled out of his bed, fingers grazing over the fabric of his interview uniform. Moonlight— yes, her name was Moonlight, had brought it up earlier, after she and Jacquelyn decided that Tobias's safest bet was to appeal to the Capitol as a sex object. Despite his protests, he would still be wearing the sheer, translucent fabric on the stage the next evening.
Clock read 2:30 and he groaned, fingers rushing through his hair. He needed to be asleep. He needed to be well-rested before everyone in the Capitol saw him and assumed he was sickly like Reese was, or that he was some kind of junkie like the girl Reese loved was.
But instead, he found himself stumbling toward the elevator, pressing the button to the roof. He watched through glass windows as the ground grew further and further away and he ascended into the sky. Couldn't help feeling like it wouldn't be the last time he had a view like this.
The doors opened, and he was met with a shadow, teetering on the edge of oblivion and a twelve-story complex. Before he could stop himself, he leaned against an air conditioning vent and cross his arms over his chest.
"I guess I should tell you to jump or something, huh?" This boy dying meant more of a chance for Tobias to live. It was a disgusting thought, and he would have hated himself for it, except he knew he wanted to live, which meant this boy would have to die eventually.
Right?
"Or, maybe I'm supposed to tell you to be careful— who the hell knows?"don't let it fool you
don't let it pull you down
down fills the ground
gravity is proud
