Alder McKay was named for the trees that grow near the pond where he was born. His mother named him, but his father loved the name right away.
At seventeen he is the middle child of five children. He has an older brother and sister and a younger brother and sister. He wants to turn nineteen, and become ineligible for the Hunger Games. His mother died giving birth to his youngest sister. Alder's father works at the local lumber mill.
He is male, and has strong homosexual feelings. He tries to hide his feelings because he doesn't know how to handle them, and he doesn't want to disappoint his father.
Alder is proud to live in District 7. His family lives in a cozy log cabin near the edge of the loggers' outpost. It's filled with warm hand knit items made by his mother, and sturdy wooden furniture crafted by his father. It's fireplace burns hot during winter, heating the entire home. Alder shares the loft area with his two brothers.

History:
Alder hates the idea of the Hunger Games. His father has taught him how to use an axe skillfully. Before she died, Alder's mother taught him about the edible and poisonous foods of the forest. He's not the fastest runner, but running through the forest has built his stamina, so he can run for long distances at a steady pace.

Appearance:
Alder has beige colored skin, a result of being biracial. His father is Caucasian, and his mother African American. He has his father's hazel eyes and black straight hair like his mother. It is perfectly coiffed to the front of his head, and shiny from homemade oils distilled from balsam leaves. He has a long nose and cheeks that are pocked by a disease that swept through 7. He is self conscious about this. Alder is 5'7" tall, weighs 120 pounds and has a wiry build. His arms are strong from chopping wood and climbing trees, and his legs are likewise toned from running and climbing. Alder usually wears flannel shirts, with fleece vests zipped up over them. His jeans are usually covered in bits of bark and his boots, caked with red mud. He is cold natured, and often wears gloves and hats when others are shirtless. This invites their teasing.
Personality:
Alder is generally kind and generous, but trying to hide his orientation can make him surly and awkward. Alder suffers from depression and OCD, which is untreated because of Panem's poor healthcare. He tends to be insecure, and possessive of his best friend, who he has a crush on. He is haunted by the fact that his friend is straight and could never love him back.
History:
Alder has a good memory, and does good in school. Despite being physically fit, Alder hates sports, and spends his time drawing with carpenter's pencils and painting with berry juice. Because he is not into typical District 7 male activities, he is bullied. He likes to hang out high in the trees, playing the pan flute his father crafted for him. On the weekends, Alder works as a sap tapper for a local maple shop, to earn some extra money. His favorite color is golden yellow and his favorite food is flapjacks. Mockingjays are his favorite animals, as they often repeat his tunes high in the trees. Alder is adventurous and loves to write. He has to hide his writings, because most of them speculate about what lies beyond the borders of Panem.
