Hermione stumbled away from Draco’s body. She felt her stomach threatening to jump out of her throat. She had killed someone. Someone she knew. Not one of these odd characters – did they have magic too? Certainly some of them were practiced in witchcraft and wizardry. Hermione had books and cleverness, but she also had bravery and would do whatever she needed to do to survive.

Clutching her hand to her chest and praying that she remembered the charm later to reattach or reanimate the fingers, she came to a stop. And there stood her next challenge. A robot, great.

Robot Dad

I have killed three people. I have seen my daughter's face in the sky. I have lost a hand. I carry it with me, hanging from my belt. I could reattach it later when I have the proper tools.

Hermione gasped, her wand not striking true. The air rushes from her chest and she knows that she is near death. No, she must fight. She must be brave and carry the Gryffindor name with her to the end. Just like Harry would do.

She blocks his next attack and her body is aching in exertion. One more spell, that is all she needs.

Hermione felt cold. So cold. Maybe this was how Sirius felt as he fell into the veil. Maybe this was how Cedric Diggory felt when Wormtail took his life. Maybe this was what it felt like for James and Lily to die at the hand of Voldemort. She gasped one last breath as a bright light overtook her eyes and she fell to the ground.
