I'd been incapable of speaking for the last four years of my life. It wasn't too much of a struggle sometimes, but other times it was, like it was today. Whenever I needed help with something, I couldn't ask for it, and that was the trouble this time. I had been working on a bit of a project while I was outside. I'd been wandering about, near the borders of the District, looking for just the right berries to add to the recipe I was making. The trouble was, I wasn't the best at recognizing which ones were safe. Sure, I knew Nightlock was deadly, and I knew what that looked like, but beyond that, I was clueless. I just needed someone who could help me but wouldn't steer me wrong.
The only berries I'd gathered so far were a few, small, red ones. I wasn't going to eat them or put them in my recipe quite yet, though, as I didn't know if they were safe. I needed to find someone to tell me. That, however, was a struggle when one couldn't speak. I had tried going into the main area of the District to see if anyone could assist me, but many of them just passed me by without saying a word, even when they were actually capable of doing so, unlike me.
This made me wander back to the very edges of the District without crossing over the fence. I would try my hardest to either find someone who could help me or find something like strawberries or raspberries that I knew for sure were safe. Luckily, as I wandered about with the berries in my hands, I spotted someone else. Even though it was unlikely that this person would be willing or able to help me, I decided to give it a shot. I walked up to him, and tapped him on the shoulder.
