Sako Kwan
"The past is over, and the future is never guaranteed"
Basics
Name: Sako Kwan
Age: Fifteen
Gender: Female
District: Eight
Appearance
Sako is a light and dainty girl at only 5' 5'', and weighing around a hundred pounds. She is noticeably skinny, even in a district where everyone is starving, and her ribs and hip bones show against her skin. Her arms and legs are a little too long for her body, but she still manages to look graceful when she walks. Her skin is pale and ghost-like, primarily because she spends most of her hours working at the textile factories, but also because she doesn't go outside very much.
With thick brown hair and warm brown eyes, Sako is considered pretty by most. She can't compete with a lot of the popular girls, but she's had her fair share of relationships.
Her hands are small and nimble, perfect for sewing and performing other intricate tasks. Although she's never tried some of these things, she would probably be good at trap-making and weaving because of her experience with sewing. She's also extremely fast, which would be an advantage in the Games. Some of her weaknesses would be hand-on-hand combat and anything too strenuous, like climbing since she's so small.

Personality
Sako is a mixture between an introvert and an extrovert. Sometimes, when she's in a good mood, she's happy to talk to people and do activities with friends. But when she's in a bad mood, she'd much rather sit in her room and read or knit, which are some of her favorite hobbies. Overall, she's a pretty well-rounded kid and gets a good mix of socialization, education, and alone time. She's likable and well-known at school, but most people see her as "average" so she usually gets overshadowed.
Her gentle approach to life comes from her mother, who taught her that worrying doesn't do anything but drain the fun out of life. Sako's calmness radiates in such a way that people feel at peace when they are around her, so she's usually the first one people come to when they have a social problem. Because of this, she has a vast knowledge of people and relationships, and is capable of analyzing a person and their intentions just by talking with them. Sako finds great joy in mending relationships and building new ones.
To some people, Sako can come off as a know it all. She gets easily irritated by negative people or bullies, so she'll calmly repeat life lessons her mother has taught her. She's not used to people disliking her, so she often gets flustered or emotional when people ignore or taunt her.
When things go bad, Sako isn't usually prepared for it. She's used to being around positive people and influences, so she hasn't really been exposed to the darkness of the world. She's so naive that she pretends the Games are fake because she can't stand the thought of children dying every year. No matter how positive she is, Sako is constantly plagued by nightmares of kids being ripped away from their families and murdered by the Capitol. You wouldn't be able to tell on the outside, but Sako is severely depressed. She tries not to let it affect the rest of her life, so she restrains it to her room. Every night she cries herself to sleep and gets all the negativity out of her system so she can be strong for her loved ones and friends.
If Sako were to ever get Reaped, she would be devastated. Being away from her mother and friends would break her, but being thrown into the arena would be the equivalent of Hell. She would likely be a total wreck for a few days, but then manage to pull herself together enough to make some friends, learn a few skills, and try to die strong for her loved ones. But secretly she'll be plagued by selfish thoughts of winning, even though the thought of killing is completely foreign to her. If she killed anyone, her mother would never be able to forgive her.

History
Sako was born to Mio and John Kwan. Her father left when she was very young, so Sako has always been her mother's girl. Mio was determined to shield her daughter from the horrors of the world for as long as possible, in an attempt to preserve her childlike innocence. Sako was totally ignorant for all of her early years, perfectly content playing with her dollies and drawing pictures when her mom got home from work. She wasn't aware of Mio's long, grueling work hours or the Hunger Games that took place every year.
Mio knew that Sako would have to go to school eventually. When she turned five, Mio convinced the district that Sako had a medical condition that made her weak and frail. Sako was held back a year, giving Mio one last year of innocence with her daughter. But when little Sako turned six, the district forced her to go to school.
School changed everything for the Kwan family. Sako soon learned about the Hunger Games and was distraught for weeks. She barely knew what it meant to die, let alone what it meant to murder. Mio was struggling as well because nothing she did seemed to cheer her daughter up. Sako quickly outgrew her childhood activities, and Mio began to realize that she didn't have much in common with her daughter anymore. Sako would much rather go to friends' houses or read in her room than play games in the living room with her mother.
Mio was losing her relationship with her child, but there was one thing she could still hide from Sako. She couldn't bear to expose her daughter to the harsh working conditions in the factories of Eight, so she took up odd jobs and worked extra hours whenever possible in order to scrape by. If Sako asked for something, her mother bought it, no matter how much it cost. Mio didn't want Sako to realize that money was short.
Sako inevitably found out about their financial status and got a job without her mother's permission. Once Mio got over the initial shock, it actually did wonders for their relationship. They got to spend the late afternoons together, sewing away in the factories until their hands were sore and their fingers bled. But they had each other, and that was all that mattered. Mio began to accept that her little girl was a part of the world now, and Sako had to be careful not to trigger her mother's protectiveness by staying safe.
