dust the dust up
off your shoulders
you’ll come round
and be h u m a n again
If he never saw this place again it would be too soon. The cleanness of it was the worst. State-of-the-art facilities and smiling staff, white walls, gourmet food. None of it was enough. There was so much death and destruction and now Mackenzie was a part of it. Just another smile in the crowd, because maybe if he feigned happiness then his tributes would be naive enough to forget what was to come.
He hated knowing with absolute certainty that at least one of the people under his care would die, and that was if he was lucky. He survived; he thought that would be enough. But, maybe, if he feigned happiness then he would be naive enough to forget what was to come.
He held a red rose in his hands, twirled its stem around in his fingers as the elevator lifted him higher and higher. Soon the doors would open and Jacquelyn would be on him again to advise Lex and Angel. They had questions he didn't want to answer. It seemed cruel, telling them that the only way to win was to trade in their humanity. Especially when he still wasn't sure if his own humanity had been returned to him. But he couldn't hide from it forever; he knew that.
The doors opened, Jacquelyn began to speak through too-tight lips. He held up a hand to silence her, walked straight to the window sill where Angel sat. The city was just on the other side of that glass; the Capitol. Freedom.
"I hope you get to experience the world some day," he said, taking the seat next to him.
"You could, you know? If you wanted. You're thin, but you're quick. Just—" he searched his mind for the words, "If you have to fight, be the first one to strike. Allies matter, but there's only one winner. Don't let them get too close."
He paused, tossing the rose onto Angel's lap.
"And don't ever give up. No matter what."
