Each part of his soul sat on edge the day of — not even a single cannon. Not even another tribute, that’s good right? Means he’s on his own, slick in tar and a bag of his own making. He scratched as it patched into his pores but he never complained about dirt. Nobody died, when do the games begin? 

What if if he simply just out ran them. That seems reasonable if anything, that a boy made of sticks and hair could just slip through the entire arena but he had no reason not to believe it. With loose fern sticklings getting pulled in onto the tar of his legs, Lorenzo saw it as paradise. That he had made it already, somewhere on the outskirts too far to be caught by cannon fire or other tributes. 

Still, he ran. 

And surprising to circumstance, he slept like a baby. Nearly better than he had at home, sprawled out into a bush and his one complaint was that it broke his fucking back. But being glued to rocks and thorns and sleeping among them was easiest for a boy born stupid; Enzo wasn’t worried. The worst part, he was a flight over fight child and had he been caught there was- well, not a plan. Just more running. 

By morning he had found himself in the tide pools on accident, yawn forming in his eyes

Rung out to the riptides, he’s lost his footing once, twice, four times. At this point he might as well just stay on the damn ground, whip thrown into the sand as he catches his leg into the waters. Sticky black losing itself almost as roughly as Enzo had. ”Fuckmedead-“ two birds digging into his forearm. 

Groovy. He screamed bloody murder.

Pain wasn’t something he knew well, blood evident on his skin and he panicked swatting the first one off of him. Something nervous in him — are these even fucking chickens? His scatter bag collapsed as he fell onto the ground, Polaroids and Javalins and what would Mace do? wait wait no, 

even cooler, what would Justice do? Fourteen year old lungs and if he screamed hard enough maybe he’d look more, more masculine? Maybe? Camera ready, he was always terrible at holding composure.

YA FUCKIN BIRD,” so. That didn’t work. Standing on both feet, javelin launched into orbit and blocked by the flying one. Enzo has discovered himself cornered, in between a rock and a hard place — more aptly described as a parrot and a chicken. Perhaps it was time to lie down, give up and wallow in self pity like a dumbass; muscle mass pained in the way his arms flexed with movement. A pulsing motion, hot tears as he bit his own lip. 

The birds clamped onto his skin and tore gashes, moreso pain than he’d ever be so used to. Javalin back into his hand as he ran under the surveyor, Temple must’ve had it easier. Rather than morning murder and Enzo didn’t prepare for any type of self defense so early. Stated as if he had prepared for any at all, Justice attempted to help him with a knife fight. 

Or maybe he just tried to kill him.

Lorenzo found himself on the ground again. Free will this time, cowering to cover his face as the chicken bit back into his skin. It was something stupid to consider camera angles, but it was one of these few tips Justice gave him. Be charismatic, be ready — look good. When wasn’t he? Except for, yknow, right now as he screamed into the sand with nips of skin taken out of him. 

He didn’t realize how hard chickens could bite, how farmers could deal with this every day. The games hadn’t even started, Enzo was just settling down, getting ready. Hand on his chest, aviator bird digging into his backpack settled on his spine as if for protection, fuck he got tired of this real fast. Impression wore thin and he got one good hit, that’s important- bet Justice couldn’t do that. 

Maybe. Mace probably could, he could probably just eat them whole.
