Oh, the woes of the wealthy. You see, material objects become boring when someone can afford them. A beautiful, secluded mansion? Check. Party after lavish party, beautiful women and handsome men coming and going? Check. All the tailored clothing he could ask for? Diamond jewelry? Private security? Check, check, check.
But, as he stepped over fifty, Malcolm Nox realized that none of it meant anything, for he had no one to share his experiences with, no one to leave them behind to when he passed on. He was lonesome; moreso than his poor, entitled heart could handle.
He pondered on what to do for weeks, perhaps even months. He could marry, sure, but anyone who would have him would surely only be in it for the money. Plus, romance was never something he'd ever cared to see out until the end. As soon as things felt routine, he forced himself away. That was what had made his grandfather's business so staggering, and what had allowed his father to keep things just as well; Malcolm came from a line of heartbreakers and he had already lived his life as one: there was no taking that back this late in the game.
He could've donated it to charity but Ripred knew most of his wealth would end up in some Capitol bank vault, secured until they needed it. And besides, poor people were poor for a reason. It wasn't his fault the job market was crashing and that racial, sexual, and gender bias made it nearly impossible to get hired for decent wages. Too bad, so sad.
None of it really fixed his issue. He could give it to anyone who walked past, but what good would it have done if they weren't able to treat it with care? And what would come of his business? His fahter's, his grandfather's, the Nox legacy? No, what he needed was someone tailor made to take his place when he was gone.
He had his team look into the youth of District Five. Daft, boring, or doomed to a life of mediocrity, most of them. But he did eventually assemble a team of very good potential heirs. A girl who was making waves as a fashion designer, a girl who could make delphinium grow in the desert, his team even unearthed a bastard who shared his name. His first thought was to sue the family for defamation of character, but he figured he'd let them slide given that he hadn't paid a nickle of child support on the young man.
He hand-wrote each letter and mailed them out that very same day. There was no way they'd turn him down; they'd be fools to do so. An internship, he'd called it, a chance to get hands-on experience for a multi-million dollar company, and the chance to become the owner of it some day. All they had to do was prove to him that they were worthy, more worthy than the competition.
Oh, and of course, they had to live in the mansion for the year of their internship. And they weren't allowed to leave until the internship was up, as he couldn't risk them exposing any pertinent information about the corporation to the general public.
He sat back in his chair and smiled, gleeful and excited for the company that would soon come.
He pressed a button on his phone labeled "intercom."
"Carol," he said, proudly, "bring me a whiskey on the rocks."
This is a revamp from an old plot of mine, located here! This plot is not yet open; I will be posting character skeletons below and once I've posted them all, I'll begin accepting applications.
CAUTION: Characters will die in this plot. I'll be randomizing the victims but also I might figure out some sort of points system so that active characters have less of a chance of dying than inactive ones. But, like, it's a murder plot. If you sign up, please recognize that your character can die.
