She felt like all the protection she was receiving was useless.
She stood at her second of twelve victory tour ceremonies and watched as the people of two seemed to be in awe of her. After all, she was the first career to win seven games since Justice Fray had taken the crown in the 73rd. Annie couldn’t help but realize that she had defied the odds in some sort of way. Sure, she didn’t have a high kill count, but she pulled kills out where it mattered the most.
A four way finale was nothing to be proud of, and there were so many ways it could have went sideways, but Annie was lucky enough to make it out alive.
So did the rest of them, but Annie didn’t try to make sense of it.
Instead she stood there was they replayed most of the games coverage for two to see. Annie was told that this was tradition, mostly because they wanted to study just exactly how she did it. How she achieved the crown.
If she could speak she would tell them instead of letting them watch her actions, but it was not her turn. Instead the mayor began to speak and then the victors from two spoke as well. It had been ages since someone from two had even remotely made it to the finale, so Annie seeing Shy here was somewhat of a trip.
However, no one was paying attention to him, because he did not win. He was here because he had to be, just like Annie did too.
She listened to people drone on and on about their experience watching Annie in action and Annie couldn’t help but visibly roll her eyes. They knew nothing about experience. They didn’t have to kill anyone to get where Annie was, and while they all lived, Annie still had their blood her hands.
No matter how much the capitol tried to cleanse her from the guilt and shame, no matter how much they tried to convince her that she now deserved honor and fame, no matter how much they told her had nothing to feel but pride, Annie didn’t believe on piece of it.
She was a murderer who just happened to get a reprieve from it at the last minute.
She stood up and spoke minimally, mostly because she didn’t even know how to address people who were just like her.
Careers and ex careers who knew exactly how to kill the same way that she did.
She looked out into the crowd to try to calm herself, but that didn’t work. Instead a flurry of emotions took over her mind, and she froze.
She didn’t know what to say to the people of two.
”Youre tributes fought valiantly.” came out of her mouth, and Annie could throw up right now she was so nervous. ”They have nothing to be ashamed of, you all, have nothing to be ashamed of.” Annie spoke words that she wasn’t sure if she meant, but they were flooding out of her quicker than she could keep up. ”Keep working hard, keep training, and maybe one day, two will be able to bring home another victor.” Annie said before looking at Eve and Shy, ”Cherish these two, their lives mean more than anyone will ever know.” She smiled and stepped back from the podium, an eruption of applause following as she stepped behind the stage to wipe tears away from her face.
Her stylist gave her a tissue and hugged her, a physical connection that she wasn’t expecting, but one that she could appreciate for what it was worth.
She knew that it was going to be tough for her for the next couple weeks, but she didn’t expect for it to hit her this hard already.
Maybe it was because Bette was still fresh in her mind.
They brought her to a coliseum and showed her the various places where they trained their hopefuls in the art of killing. Annie couldn’t help but grimace, noticing that it was very different here then it was in four. While four was also considered a career district, Annie hadn’t see most of the tools that two had at their disposal.
They ushered her into a simulation room, a giant camera affixed in the ceiling of it, and asked her to demonstrate some of her skills.
They asked her to do this in one as well, but Annie didn’t feel the same amount of pressure that they exerted onto her here. It was like they were expecting her to experience what she went through in the games all over again, and she had half a mind to tell them to fuck off.
However, she had to be a gracious victor, and disturbing the order of things was not something that she wanted to do. It would not be worth it to her in the long run.
So she took the throwing knives that they handed her and waited for the simulation to start.
She took a deep breath as she listened for footsteps in the distance. Before she even knew it, a knife left her hand and went right into the enemy coming towards her.
She thought she would suffer an episode of PTSD before she killed again, but maybe deep down, this truly was what Annie was good at. She sighed, throwing another knife at an enemy that wasn’t even remotely close to her. ”This is too easy, crank up the difficultly people.” Annie screamed. All of the sudden a flying axe came hurling at her and she spun to the side, dodging the axe and throwing a knife into the face of the enemy. She smiled at that one.
”Thank you.” she said as she stepped forward and realized that now she was being hunted. Good. She could finally put on the show that the district of two obviously wanted.
She made quick work of the simulation, making sure to leave her mark on the district that wanted to see her in her full glory.
She finally had some free time, which meant she got to meander around the district to see what it had to offer.
She didn’t know much about two, but the coliseum seemed to stick out the most to her, seeing as it was a big area that only housed a couple of things.
The stylist brought her a bagged lunch, to which she asked if she could eat it in the stairs of the coliseum.
They agreed as long as the peacekeepers and them could be nearby, which Annie agreed to in a heartbeat. Anything to be near what made her the most comfortable.
She took a seat on the stone that covered the coliseum and simply admired the view. She pulled out the sandwich in the bag and began to eat it in silence as she remained there with her thoughts. She knew that there was probably more stops planned for today, but if Annie could just have this amount of time to herself, then she was good with that.
After all the shit she had been through, it was the least the capitol could give her.
