"Mr. McDong?" they'd say in the classroom at school. A hidden attempt at giggling upon hearing my name would surface among the students, and a smirk would grace its way across my face. My name often brought humor to others, and that made me like it, whereas, when it came to most of my siblings, well... they hated their names. I could see why one may not want to be called something like 'Daddy McDong' or 'Modest McDong' or even 'Prominent McDong', but that didn't change the fact that those were their names.
Personally, I'd say that one should embrace their name, regardless of what it is.
Today, people had made a lot of comments about my name, and the fact that I'd decided to go by the nickname society had given me, which was Willy, rather than my birth name, which was William. When people made these comments, they were usually teasing me about it or calling me stupid. Some people, however, thought it was cool that I'd 'turned the way people bullied me into something I could laugh at'. Regardless, in every part of my life, when it came to my name, there was not only laughter, teasing and criticism, but also questioning, as well as the occasional compliment in how I'd decided to handle the things prior.
When I arrived back at home today, coming in the door after yet another day of name-related tee-hees and giggles, I took my shoes and coat off after crossing the threshold and then proceeded to close the door behind me. Dropping my backpack to the floor, I looked around for a moment before my one good eye caught sight of my sister, Daddy. She often insists that people call her 'Dandy', which I find strange. Why would you try to change such a humorous name when you can get so much fun out of it?
"Hey Daddy, ya have a good day today?" I said in a bit of a tease to my sister, immediately recoiling back a little bit so that she wouldn't connect if she tried to swing at me.
"Er, I mean- hey Dandy, what's up?" I 'corrected' myself. I laughed a bit when I said this, not really caring about her response. Sure, she hated her name, but why did that mean that I couldn't have a good time teasing her about it? I pushed my hair out of my face, all the while a smirk was upon my lips. This was either going to be really fun or go terribly wrong. Then again, most of my life was like that.
In the life of Willy McDong, things either went extremely right, or really, really badly. I was pretty well used to that at this point.
