She broke a nail. Furiously typing on the touch screen, setting up the mutts for the day. She'd been talking over her shoulder to Josie and then snap. An expensive red nail cracked in half. She'd excused herself, allowing the other Gamemakers to take their seats and finish the job. Leaning back against a desk covered in similar tablets and displays, they looked down at their right, index finger.
It hit them like a wave how uncomfortable they were. Sweating under layers and layers of foundation, a fake eyelash stabbing the corner of their eye, pins holding their wig in place rubbing against the scalp hard enough to draw blood.
They thought about taking it all off. Kicking off the heels, sliding out of the corset and throwing on a robe or something and going back to work. No one had ever seen them like that. No on except the bartender on Third Street and all his regulars.
Zaya's eyes slid over to the large mirror set into the wall. Snow liked to lurk behind it some days. They think it was mostly to watch over people like Kinkade, but now with the weight of a Hunger Games on their shoulders, they couldn't help but feel the man's heavy gaze on their back.
Kinkade got a second chance, something tells Zaya that they will not.
Third games under their belt, and now they were getting skittish. They had been new and shiny the last Games. Still photographed, still fawned over for their fashion line and sense of style.
After three more years, Zaya Reine was simply old news.
Oh, Zaya Reine is a Gamemaker? She seems kind of old, I thought Snow would have sent her out to pasture. She's not exactly... groundbreaking.
Old. Boring. A face that fades into the background. First with Azure and Capricious then with Nil and Azazel. Pretty, but an extra in the show. Set dressing.
Their eyes burned holes into Snow's watchful mirror perch. They wondered if he was there, watching them have what can only be described as a breakdown.
"Get me a whiskey," Zaya finally said, nodding to the nearest Avox. The poor girl paused, her eyes questioning for just a moment before running off to fill the request. Zaya then stepped forward, leaning over Bea and Josie's shoulders to look at the display in between them.
"We need something big. Now. We can't wait til tomorrow to grab attention." Eyes roamed the map, looking at the various blinking lights signaling where each tribute was. "There."
A broken off nail pointed to Thumb Rock.
"Make it happen."
