SIOBHAN CAHYO Female, Age 17 District 4 |
ARCHETYPE
The Sage. The Thinker. The Philosopher.
Understand the self and understand the world;
The truth shall set you free.
APPEARANCE
As she stood out on the dock, watching the springtime sun slowly move closer and closer to the distant horizon, Siobhan was happy. Not that it was clear to see, no grin made its way across her bow-shaped lips, no excitement flashed in her large brown eyes. None of the features of her oval face seemed to suggest Siobhan was feeling much of anything besides boredom. But as barren of emotion as she appeared, Siobhan was undeniably happy. She was about to return to the open sea, the place she loved most.
She waited patiently by the large commercial fishing boat that she knew she would soon be aboard while the wind blew through her long dark hair, counting the time passing second by second. Hal, the boat's owner, was late. The sun had now transformed the sky into a patchwork of pinks and reds and oranges, mirrored by the gentle waves of the sea and creating a symphony of colour. Normally Siobhan would be swimming in the water while the waves were gentle like this, building up her endurance and strength. This time it would have to wait.
Years of this swimming practice were showing on her 5'11" frame. While she wasn't nearly as large as the many careers she sees practising for their chance to attain glory in the Hunger Games, her 140 pound weight was made up of little fat and a lot of wiry muscle. When it came to the water, she could give the Careers a run for their money.
PERSONALITY
Unlike the Careers, Siobhan's motivation for staying in good shape wasn't some desire for glory and fame but her own safety out at sea. If the boat she was on were to sink, these swimming skills could make the difference between her life and death. In fact, she had to prove herself a capable swimmer for Hal in order to be allowed to join him and his crew on his fishing journeys in the first place. It's generally frowned upon to have anyone under the age of 18 working on a fishing boat (although the Capitol isn't too picky about who's catching their fish), and having her drown would surely end Hal's fishing career.
As she continued to wait for Hal and his crew, Siobhan peeled her attention away from the sun and looked out into the sea as far as she could see. She loved everything about the sea. It could be incredibly generous, a bounty of life that sustained her family as well as so many families in both the Capitol and District 4. It could be terrifyingly fierce, rising into towering mountains that can spell doom for anyone foolhardy enough to be out during these times. But most of all she loved how much mystery was at sea. It has so many secrets, so much wisdom kept deep beneath.
It was much like Siobhan this way. Behind her impassive face, she was full of wisdom about intelligence. In the school she had developed great academic skill, out at sea she learned great wisdoms of life. Oh how much she wished the sea would divulge its secrets to her. The things it could teach her about the world, about herself! They seemed to be just beneath the surface, tantalisingly close but terribly far away. If only she could reach them...
HISTORY
She was brought back to reality from her world of thoughts by Hal's raspy voice calling her name, its owner walking towards her with the 4 other surly members of the fishing crew. Siobhan smiled at the site of this older man, with his stubbly grey hair, broken nose, and mouth full of gaps where teeth have gone missing over the decades. His weathered look hid the big soft heart of the man.
Siobhan's father had once been a member of his fishing crew. He had been a jovial, boisterous man who had the same love for the sea as she did. Unfortunately, it was the sea that became his demise when Hal's crew got caught in a terrible storm out at sea, knocking him off the deck and into the tumultuous waves. Siobhan's dad was never one to practice swimming. His death was too much for her mother; once a poised, kind woman, the news pushed her into an emotional frenzy that she never snapped out of. Siobhan, only 10 at the time, had to learn to keep her emotions from showing so she could take care of her mother the best she could.
Despite the pain of losing her father, it is thanks to his death that Hal allowed Siobhan to join his crew for their fishing voyages when she did not have school to attend to. Half due to his feelings of guilt over the decision to make that ill-fated voyage, half due to her keen ability to work a blade when cutting and slicing the fish for sale. Siobhan never blamed him for his father's death; she knew the sea was an unpredictable beast. Besides, it's hard to hate the man who brings you to the place that makes you happiest. The place she was about to go again.
"Ready to sail?" Hal asked as he and his crew approached. Siobhan looked out at the sun, watching it finally touch the waters on the horizon. Her mouth curled into a tiny smile. She began to board the boat.
"I'm ready."
