A smirk that lasted a mile.

They didn't always recruit spies so young, but then, after half a decade the Rebellion got desperate. She was happy to serve. It meant an escape from classes where they expected her to read and spell and repeat. It meant exploring the world, dying though it was.

She fidgeted through seminars on conversations and espionage and state secrets. All of it could have been summarized in a memo, which would have been a better use of her precious time.

Then, they let her loose in the districts. One by one. A few months at a time, starting when she was sixteen. By the time she was eighteen, she returned to the rebellion headquarters, full of information and nausea.

She didn't ask what they named her daughter.

But she had a reasonably good idea what the surname should have been.

After - after her body had been opened and contorted and bled - she found herself in the strangest of districts, adrift and untethered. She was used to mountains and oceans. Here, she found only flat as far as her grey eyes could see. "So this is home? I knew someone here, once." She loved how mature she sounded.

Shouldering her pack, a hunting knife digging into her fattened hip, she reached for the sunset's reds. She fingered wild wheat, admiring the horizon, even as Peacekeepers ushered her back inside.
