THE 83RD MUTT CONTEST!

Attention Members! Would you like to contribute to the 83rd Hunger Games from a Gamemaker's standpoint? Here's your chance to contribute!

Come up with a "muttation" or other genetically altered wild beast using the following form, and reply to this thread with your finished product. The best mutts may be included in the 83rd or other future Hunger Games. There is no limit to how many mutts you may submit, so feel free to post more as they come to you (although remember to edit your post rather than double-posting if someone else has posted before you)

If your muttation is used, you will receive credit for your little beastie on the Muttation Directory thread that will be present during the Games, as well as on the Site Wiki's Muttation Page. Note that the Gamemakers (staff) reserve the right to make minor changes to your creations.

Notes: Mutts involving humans will not be used, and mutts created initially "to kill people," "to destroy people," or "to torture people" will also have to be explained very well to be used. Be more creative than that!

You may want to refer to the Arena Map for climate-based inspiration. For the 83rd, we are looking for mutts that fit our Over the Garden Wall theme.

Brief Summary: their origins are highly debated; were they discarded data, given sentience from a millennium of entropy? (No). Were they created as educational pets for Capitolite kids? (Maybe). Were they used during the war for long range communication? (Probably not, those dang rebels could see from miles away). Regardless of origin, the UNOWN (or more affectionately referred to as OWO) could best be described as an alphabet set with feelings. Nanotechnology and advanced AI have come together to create this fantastical creature that can manipulate electromagnetic fields, float above the ground, or be used by a preteen to spell out rude words. Relatively harmless, but watch out for their sharp angles.

Corcupine
Brief Summary: A birth of excess and ”What if we tried it?” scientific ponderings, this muttation is a genetic variant of the Porcupine. Although it contains the same sharp quills for defense, it was bred for the sake of Capitolite awe and wonder. Much friendlier and less defensive than its Porcupine counterpart, its quills emit a natural oil that resembles the wick of a candle. When trained to do so -- or under intense stress -- the Corcupine’s quills will emit another chemical that causes the ends to spontaneously combust, remaining aflame for light, better vision, and defense. Though the creature is friendly enough, it will shoot its flaming quills at those who put it under great stress. Capitolies often use these creatures as fun decoration and lighting for parties, dances, and blowing out their quills for birthday wishes.

Ignis Pallidi

Brief Summary: These mutts were initially created long ago, designed to resemble the Jack O' Lanterns of a long dead autumn holiday. While most of the holiday tradition died, the Jack O' Lantern remained a popular autumn decoration among Capitolites. While the ancestral Jack O' Lanterns were merely the gutted remnants of a squash, the Ignis Pallidi remains very much alive, its facelike markings grown instead of carved. It uses bioluminescence to give off an eerie, foreboding glow. But most terrifying of all is it's ability to scream bloody murder at those who tread too close. Good for providiing Capitolite guests with a scare at an autumnal party. Terrible for a tribute who doesn't want their enemies to know where they are. Come across them in an arena and they won't hurt you, but whoever follows their screams to find you may be enough of a danger on their own.

brief summary ;

what declares her presence is the thick wafts of mist that seems to engulf everything with a hunger, blanching the world in a bone-white color, her exhaled breath. then, her song carries itself through the air with jagged notes that a melody shouldn’t have, as if sung through sharp teeth. the woods join the chorus, and the serrated sound searches for its prey, like the mist had. at last, she comes, softly so, her dress gnarled with dead wood and withered leaves, her sharp fingers yearning for flesh, her crown a lattice of winter’s branches. the only part of her that mirrors a human’s are her eyes that glower, as iridescent as a lantern’s light. she and her sister were born to be heralds of terror, to fossilize the once-rebels with dread in the woods they took shelter in, and she still serves her purpose within the deciduous woods, foraging amongst leaves and branches.

brief summary ;

her song, unlike her sister in the woods', is much sweeter, each note honeyed and resonant. she sings for the ears to step closer to the river’s murky edge and see how she lurks beneath its silvery surface. by the time safety is out of depth, she’ll rise from the waters she hide in, sensually so, rivulets cascading down her scaled body that glistens and ripples as water would. at that moment, her song becomes a mimicry of her sister’s, sharp and discordant, but the prey cannot escape now. in the water, she is a vicious predator, with jaws borrowed from a shark’s and talons of a beast. her sister is a terror on land, and she is the mistress of the shallow depths, once renowned for luring rebels near rivers to their deaths. what she longs for is the wine under your skin to color her river red, and the savage reputation she once had.

brief summary ;

there's a strange luminescence in the dark. it moves as if it is the wind and the drafts themselves, and dances as the lights of a carousel would. the appara's ghastly, phantasmagorical forms made the Capitol quite astir, with demands for the creatures rising and the presence of their eerie glow alive in most capitolites' windows. they were a wonder for the eyes, and a warmth to the skin. But, all warm things increase the risk of fire, of burning. when the appara's were left to roam the empty halls of capitolites who considered homes as unfashionable structures and rarely resided there, their soft flames would tease the curtains and the carpets. they danced across the bed sheets until everything was ablaze. after the fires, the appara's were deactivated, with their hollow shells locked somewhere safe. now, they navigate about the arena and its grooves of trees, responsible for casting the sinister shadows most mistake for beasts.

Somner Dolls

Brief Summary: These old wooden lullaby dolls are originally from District Seven, having been repurposed by a fanatical Capitol inventor. He reinforced their music box interiors, replaced the rudimentary joints, and filled them with chief Capitol technology, providing them autonomy and the keen ability to move on their own. They reach just below an adult’s knee, and are outfitted with small packs, where the children used to put items of comfort; a small stuffed animal, a lucky coin, a rock they had found on the ground. Eventually the dolls wandered away from Capitol children’s bedsides, playing their eerie lullabies throughout the home and streets, often unnerving citizens in the dead of night. They became more and more difficult to catch, often evading their owners, throwing the items in their packs with a mechanical whirl and a trill of mocking music, leading people to wonder if this is a flaw in their programming or if they had begun to gain some kind of sentience.

The Pebbles

Brief Summary: Around the size of your palm or smaller, these mutts are hard to catch at first glance. Small enough to be overlooked, but dangerous enough to lead to certain doom. A creature mixed between a hermit crab and an ant, these mutts carry around a home of a tunneled rock. Originally created, as a way to keep District Four citizens away from certain shores that the capitol didn't want them to go to. After spreading too far into other areas besides the shores of Four, the capitol had to put the creature under wraps, exterminating most of them and experimenting on the rest, until now. These mutts tend to create a colony, sticking together and waiting patiently for any intruder to invade their home. Once you're unlucky enough to walk in the wrong area, they will swarm to attack their invaders with their large pincers.

Trevenant

The Trevenant were initially created to survey and guard the open woods between the Districts of Panem. They would make ghostly sounds to deter people from entering the forest, and blended in well with the regular trees around them, so no one really knew that they were there until it was too late. This became a problem, however, as the Capitol didn't like that the Trevenant were killing those that tried to escape the Districts rather than the Capitol being able to decide what to do with the people on a case by case basis (turning them into avoxes, executing them themselves, etc). Therefore, the Trevenant were removed from the woods around the Districts (at least, those that the Capitol could locate, were) and most were destroyed. A few were kept around, however, just in case another use was found for them in the future.

Gourgeist

The Gourgeist were created for a similar reason to their tree-like counterparts, Trevenant. The original purpose for these creatures was surveillance, specifically of the Districts. They're sentient pumpkins that would normally observe quietly and only respond negatively if their lives were threatened (such as during a harvest). The first time that the Gourgeist reacted negatively to a harvest, however, they quickly had to be removed by Peacekeepers, as they were extremely violent and dangerous to the people. They were kept in captivity since, and never did calm down from their violent state that they'd been brought into. They make a ghostly noise when in distress.
