She's dreading the train. The train that had taken her to a different world only to dump her back in District Eleven. The train she'd spent a better part of the year on, hopping from district to district.
They didn't need all the victors in the Capitol. Katelyn stayed away from everything Games related now, including Kass. The girl was welcome to stay in her home district and watch everything from afar.
But a Rhodes was reaped. She couldn't let Harbinger go alone with Asari. And Kirito with his health how it was. She told herself she wasn't doing it for the Capitol and their show, but for her friends.
Then Tool was dragged across the stage.
And he looked at her and asked- no begged- for help.
She paced in front of the metal doors until they slid open and Peacekeepers shoved the two tributes into the car. The white uniforms stood in the way, blocking the exit ready to catch Tool if he ran before the doors closed.
But they didn't need to.
Kass lunged forward, clutching the boy's face between her hands. The metal of her fingers pressed a little too hard against his cheek bone, still unused to the strength of the limb. She was on the tips of her toes, her chin craned to meet his eyes.
"If you want to live you have to stop this," she said. Kass' train ride had been more bickering than advice. She didn't make fudge, she didn't bake brownies, but she was going to make this boy listen to her. "Stop acting like a child."
The irony was completely lost on her.
"You have to help yourself."
