The bloodbath wasn't as exciting for me as I'd hoped that it would be. Instead, seeing so many tributes rush in to go fight each other for weapons and supplies turned me away from it, and I decided that I would rather run away from all of the chaos, so that's exactly what I ended up doing. I ran as fast as I could to get away from the fighting tributes. It wasn't time for me to be killed or to do any killing yet.
By the time I reached a place that seemed safe enough to stop and rest, I finally took a good, deep breath, and tried my best to calm my nerves. I couldn't let myself panic, especially when no other tributes had even so much a laid a hand on me. I waited there quietly, expecting to hear cannons, but not a single one sounded. Had everyone gotten out of the bloodbath alive? I certainly hadn't expected that. That meant that there were still twenty-four of us in the arena, and I was no closer to winning than I had been when I first stepped off of that pedestal.
I leaned up against a tree in the forest I'd found, and looked at everything around me. There were definitely some things here that would be useful later on. There were plants, plenty of wood for fires, hell, there was even an axe, looking as if it had simply been abandoned where it was. Although, I knew that wasn't the case. The Gamemakers had put it there, of course. This arena was created for us, so I doubted that anyone could have possibly just abandoned this axe here.
I picked it up and held it in my hands. The wood handle fit nicely in my grip. This would be perfect for when the time came that I actually did have to fight other tributes. A grin crossed my lips when I thought about what was to come. This was the change I had needed in my life. It was the perfect opportunity to show myself, as well as others, that I wasn't just some kid, living on the streets of Nine with no one but a bird to keep my company day in and day out.
After admiring the axe for a moment or two longer and thinking of the possibilities of what I could end up doing with it, I started to look around and pick up a few other things that I thought would end up coming in handy. When I had finally gathered what I felt that I needed, a couple of silver parachutes came down from the sky, some goodies for me attached to them. Clearly, even though I'd only gotten a middle of the road training score, someone in the Capitol liked me enough to sponsor me. I detached the items from the parachutes and took a look at them.
Hopefully, this was the start to some good things to come for me.
I was ready. I wasn't just the kid on the streets anymore. I wasn't just the weird kid with the hawk.
I wasn't just Birdboy anymore.
