Ikaia Miristioma
District 11
Childhood
In the eyes of the five year old, life was perfect. Ikaia had nothing to worry about. Ma and Pa provided for him and his twin as much as they could. Sure, eating was always an issue, and many nights the young Miristioma went to sleep with his stomach begging for more, but he had something to eat, and a roof over his head, and nothing beat spending the endless hours playing outside with Kirito, but as time went on, Ikaia quickly began to realize the world not only gives, but also takes away.
He remembers the day like it was yesterday. Pa lying on the ground, face as read as a Roma tomato, as healers gathered around doing whatever they could save him. Ma stood in the shadows with tears streaming down her face, but Ikaia wasn't entirely sure what was happening. All he knew was Pa needed help, and they were providing it to the best of their ability, but his father never returned home.
Ikaia grew up that day.
Someone had to help provide for the family.
When he wasn't in school, Ikaia spent every hours possible working as hard as he could because he wanted to make sure his family had food on the table. It didn't help when Ma fell ill, and Kirito worked relentlessly trying to nurse her back to health. It was never easy, but Ikaia had to stand back because he wasn't sure what to do, yet he had complete faith in his twin knowing he had it in him to bring her back to life.
Only once more his world crumbled when President Snow called the name of his twin.
70th Games
Ikaia stood in the middle of the district square wondering what had happened. Why was his twin chosen? They had been together for sixteen years, and Ikaia wanted to run to the stage to take his place, but nobody would let him through. Nobody would move. They held him back, and it didn't make sense. Saying goodbye for what he thought was the last time tore his soul into piece, but he took his brother's lessons to heart and did what he could to make sure Ma was still getting the care she deserved, but Ikaia wasn't Kirito. He wasn't the healer of the family, but he had to try.
Every single day from the moment the bloodbath began, Ikaia stood in the district square only going home long enough to care for Ma because he couldn't leave the big screen. His brother was fighting for his life, and Ikaia wanted to make sure he was okay.
It wasn't easy because the feelings of letting his twin down echoed through his mind, but the least he could do was keep Ma alive.
Several days went by, and Ikaia went from feeling completely hopeless to holding onto hope that his twin would make it home alive despite watching him go through the agony and changing into someone he wasn't.
During the finale, Ikaia held his breath unsure of what was going to happen, but when the last cannon sounded, he saw his brother standing in the midst of it all. Happiness and sorrow rolled down the side of his face, yet he wasn't sure where life would go from this moment.
The aftermath
Everywhere Ikaia turned someone called him a Kirito look alike, and a chasm formed between him and Kirito. In a world that was once belonging to the both of them, it suddenly turned into a world where Kirito was the most important person ever, and Ikaia was incredibly envious.
Choosing to stay in the old ragged home, he fought with his twin for the longest time and eventually didn't want anything to do with him. Ma moved into the victor village, and Ikaia stayed where he knew was home. Freezing nights passed by, and even when Kirito begged Ikaia to go sleep in a warm place out of fear of freezing to death, Ikaia simply denied because he wanted his own life without anyone standing in his way.
72nd Games
For three years in a row, district eleven brought home a victor, but the aftermath came with a price. It was his last reaping, and Ikaia was hoping for an escape. Things were slowly getting better between the two brothers, but they weren't the best, and now he stood in place listening to the same speech given every year only to watch a young girl make her way towards the stage. The name after that continues ringing through his ears.
Iain.
He was such a young boy, and Ikaia once again stood back watching as Tobias tried running forward, and Ikaia let them take the young Miristioma away. He could've volunteered to save him, but he didn't, and to this day, Ikaia blames himself for the loss of his young cousin. Watching him go through the games was heartbreaking because he knew from the moment his name was called along with Carrita that district eleven was being punished for having too much hope in all of it.
Watching him die, and burying him when he came back home was the hardest thing in the world, but he dressed him up nicely and gave him the send off he deserved.
The Tsunami
Sneaking away from district eleven to district four to help with search and rescue was one of the best decisions he's ever made. It got him away and gave him a chance to rebuild what was broken. Helping people became a passion, and he wanted to start new, but it also came with a price.
To this day, he doesn't remember much of it. Two kids were trapped inside a building, and he went in to get them out because it was swaying and ready to cave in, and watching them die wasn't on his mind.
The next thing he remembers was waking up in the medical tent wondering what had happened, but it felt like he had been hit by a train. With the help of a young man named Ezekiel, and his brother, Ikaia made a full recovery. He still walks with a limp, and struggles with the occasional headache, yet he's lucky he survived.
It was here he brought home the twin brothers he saved from the house and took them to district eleven where he adopted them as his own.
A new beginning
When Kirito became mayor, Ikaia started realizing they needed to stick together. They're bound by sharing a womb together, and he wanted to mend what was broken. Everyone needed to see that they were on speaking terms, and while things weren't the greatest at the time, Ikaia knew his brother's future depended on him.
Watching Kirito get married, and have a child of his own and adopting a child made him wonder what was in store for him?
Junior and Ekain were the two he called his own, yet he lives in a lonely world. Friends come and go, and sometimes the only time he sees another person is when he's working in the fields, or when he's in the victor's village visiting his family. They're important to him, and it took a near death experience to realize just how much he'd been missing out.
Letters he had written through the years to no one finally had a purpose, and sometimes he wanted his brother to find them to see the pain he had lingering inside, but messing with Kirito's life wasn't the smartest thing to do. Every single year he ventured to the Capitol to mentor tributes. He watched many die, and Ikaia will never understand.
On top of working in the fields, Ikaia started cleaning the graves in the tribute cemetery because everyone deserved a chance to have the best final resting place. He even placed flowers on the ones that looked abandon. It gave him a reason to wake up and change his life when he thought all was lost.
Present life
Being a father of two teenage boys isn't easy, but making sure they are safe is his entire purpose, and on top of the he wants to protect them as much as possible. When he's working in the fields, he allows them to run around with the other kids. Ma does good keeping them when he's busy, but he doesn't only work in the fields anymore. No, he digs graves for the deceased.
It's a tedious task at times trying to dig through the hard surface, but it's rewarding. Many times Junior asks him why he does it, and the answer is always the same. -
"Everyone deserves a proper send off."
His life is heading down a path he enjoys. The past is in the past, and Ikaia plans on leaving it there. Broken realities sometimes crash through his mind, but he's grateful for all he's experienced because it's made him stronger. While sometimes he still bickers with Kirito, it's nothing compared to what it was before. The chasm that was once between them has grown smaller, and a bridge reaches over it, and Ikaia wants the world for his nieces.
He isn't sure what the rest of his future holds, but he has hope that something awaits him.
Broken pieces have come together to form a beautiful world. While it's still far from perfect because he lives in district eleven, this is his home, and he's glad he's alive.
