The Ursas were dysfunctional at best and warring at worst. Teddy knew what happened at family dinners, but he's got it in his head that tonight's different. As he pulls his arms from the sleeves of his coat, hanging it where he used to hang it when he was younger, barely remembering that this was once his home. Once a place where he laughed and ran around the house with a smile, but he can also remember the pain in his heart at the sight of his mother and father, so instead he avoids them after their fake pleasant greetings. An awkward evening with is siblings, cousins, and parents was not what he wanted, but here he was with his shivering body from the cold of the snow that lingers to the sidewalks and concrete jungle that is six.

Instead of going forward, he proceeds to wrap an arm across Lilis shoulders, pulling her closer so he can whisper to her. His sister must be just as nervous as he is, neither of them really got along with mom or dad, but here they were making an effort, even if Teddy had to bribe his sister with free food and maybe a visit to the capitol in the near or far future. A sigh from his lips as he gently gives her hair the smallest of kisses and speaks finally.

"Let's try to pity them and see what they want."

The softest of smiles saved for his sister as he lets go over her before looking back. The snow had made both of their cheeks pinker around the edges from the cold and he preferred this to the heat.

"If it gets bad, just let me know and we'll leave."

Family had been fun, once.

But that was before, when the clouds of ignorance and an inability to know better had gripped him firmly within their grasp. When he had once thought that his brother was dead instead of simply missing, that Lili was the only sibling that he had and the adults were people to be trusted instead of people to arise suspicion.

And shit like this just wasn't fun anymore. Sure, he had Teddy now, and Lili, even if teenage angst and the usual sibling shit would occasionally drive a wedge in their respective relationships, as people he could count on. But aside from that? Maybe there was a cousin or two who treated him as a person and not a child (even if at sixteen he still technically was one).

But none of it was fun. People lied, even his own flesh and blood. And right now, in the midst of what should have been the happiest time of the year, all he felt was hollow. Overwhelmed. Despondent.

At least looking like he was focused on something outside of a window had turned most of the prying mouths away.
