"Merry Ratmas, Marietta!" my little sister's voice called out to me from the doorway of my bedroom. I was still lying in bed, exhausted from having stayed up late the night before. Usually, my reason for being up all hours of the night was either late-night career training or some form of partying. On Ratmas Eve, however, it was because I was making sure everything would be perfect for my family the next day. I’d made and bought presents for each of them and wrapped them that night.
I care about my family more than anything else. If harm were to come to them, I’d be broken beyond belief. Some people say I’d be hurting my family if I volunteered for the Games, as that’s what I’m training to do one day, but they’re wrong. My sister and my brothers are doing the same thing as me, and although I’d be distraught if they died, I don’t want to stop them from pursuing their dreams. From what they’ve told me, they feel the same way about me.
Getting out of bed, I look over to the doorway and smile at my sister.
“Merry Ratmas, Minerva!” I say back to her cheerily. A look of joy is upon her face, and she tells me she’s going to go wake our brothers.
When we’re all awake, we’re gathered at the dining room table for a Ratmas morning breakfast. Minerva sits to my right, our brother Kingsley across from her. Across from me is our brother Kenneth. Then, there are our parents on each end of the table. Together, we are happy.
Nothing will be allowed to break that happiness.
