When the world shakes. Nina stand alone.

The earth beneath my feet shakes. 

The world around me erupts into noise. It sounds as though I am in the middle of a thunderstorm, only its not hundreds and thousands kilometres away, but right here. It feels like I am in the heart of it, as though its happening around me, the loud harsh bangs echoing through my head. For a moment that was the only thing I could hear, the only thing that I was able to comprehend. The the harsh shrill of sirens fill the air. The sounds pierces my ear drums forcing me to crouch down for a moment, my hands clutching my head. 

What was happening?

"Nina!" I hear my name, but am unable to pinpoint from where. The lights flickered off, plunging my world into temporary darkness. Meanwhile the sirens continue their soulless scream. It doesn't take more than a few moment for the generator to kick in, my world once again flushed with light.

I couldn't quite comprehend what was happening, it was all happening so fast. Doctors and nurses buzzed with activity around me, there were sirens wailing, the sound making it hard for me to concentrate. "Nina!" The sound of my name slices through the wailing and I turn to face Doctor Arlott. Beads of sweat had formed on his brow and he rushes to my side. "There has been an explosion." What? An explosion? My eyes widen in fear and my jaws drops slightly but I can't form any words. I try to but no sounds escapes my lips, just air. "We don't know how many casualties at the moment, or if their has been any fatalities... But we have been stationed at the emergency room. We must go. Now." As soon as the words have left his lips he is off, racing down the hallway towards the emergency room. I reach for him before he can get too far, my eyes wide- "Where?" I ask, but I already knew the answer. I had felt the answer. "Here, but a few other places of the district- we can talk about this later. Right now we are needed."

This time I don't stop him, instead follow close behind as we rush through two different wards- each of them people buzzed around, no one sat still, all hands on deck- before reaching the emergency department. And what we walked into was true and utter chaos.

We were losing her.

She had lost too much blood.

She wasn't going to make it.

Arlott was at her side, his eyes monitoring the beeping screens before us. You could see the tension all over his body. Her fiddled with a tube at her wrist before turning his watchful gaze back to the monitors. Her pulse was weak and becoming weaker. He cursed under his breath running a blood stained had through his blonde hair. The day had felt like two days. I could see the exhaustion on his face, in the bags under his eyes. In the red webs of the whites of his eyes. I turned to look at the girl again. It was as though every passing minute the colour of her skin faded.

She had been bleeding heavily from a deep wound in her torso. When they had brought her in I hadn't been sure if she was even her alive... The amount of blood had been so alarming... and it had been so dark. Too dark. I had called for a nurse to get doctor Arlott immediately and had rushed to her side. Ripping back the material of her shirt I found the laceration. Flesh mangled and broken and ragged. Without too much thought I grabbed for some clean bandages and gauzes placing then against the wound, trying to stop the bleeding, to slow it down. Instantly my fingers had been painted red, the crimson liquid soaking into my pale skin. There was just so much. I had started to panic, the gauzes already soaked through with barely any sign of stopping. I didn't know what to do.

But Arlott had come shortly after that. Taken one look at my blood soaked uniform and rushed to my side, analysing the situation fast and quickly jumping into action. She was in a critical condition. Her body was failing her. I knew that. I think we both knew that. She had lost too much blood, we had seen her too late... But I could not let her go, not yet, not when her weak heart was still fighting. Still begging us to try and save it. Save her. I had to try. I couldn't lose her. I wasn't ready to lose one yet. "Is there anything more I can do for her?" My voice croaked, exhaustion evident, as I turn my tired gaze to him. "I... Surely there must be something more I can do."

But there wasn't.

She died that night.

Arlott and myself had fought for her, fought for her till her dying breath.

It was all a bit of a blur now, the last few minutes. It had happened so quickly. I remember I had just walked out for some fresh air, to feel the wind against my skin when Beth had come running after me. She said it was an emergency. That the girl had stopped breathing.

That her heart had given way.

My heart had felt like it had froze at those words. I remember that. I remember the feeling of panic, grief. Pain. That had cut through me. I would always remember that. Then I had rushed after her.

But I was too late.

She was gone.
