Anthem - Day Eight

The numbers are dwindling. Soon, unbeknownst to the largely scattered and isolated tributes, there will be a plunge in their ranks. While the anthem plays, the Gamemakers’ underlings are doing their best to repair bones, sew gashes, and -- in one case -- piece together brains. They continue into the night, working their Capitol magic as the faces of the fallen flash across the sky:

The fog lingers overnight, filtering moonlight and obscuring the stars above you, while the ground-turned-sky turns into a field of stars beneath your feet -- until, at what you might accurately guess is midnight, it blinks into dark ground again. Still, the surface below you is familiar but not safe; there’s no telling what lurks behind the fog.

For the fog doesn’t dissipate with the holograms; it’s as real as you are, and apparently here to stay, even as the temperature drops. Damp and shivering, you have no choice but to continue trying to navigate with drastically reduced sightlines.

Hold each other close for warmth, if you dare.
