You don't catch Benji until close to the end of the day. It's not like you've really been looking for him per say, you've just been keeping an eye out. Trying to keep tabs.
You've had one of the underclassmen tail him, just as a precaution. Just to see who he talks to.
Because you can still feel the bass thrum through the floorboards of that house, and you can still see the way that the lights had flickered on and off in time to the music. It was some party that Stella had invited you to, something you were obligated to, because even though school was out for a few months, the game didn't stop.
It was fine at first. It really was. But you hadn't expected to see Parker there, and so you weren't prepared to hold your tongue. You didn't even try, of course, because you're Grady and she's Parker. You've never exactly been friends. And that's never really been a secret. You don't remember who started it, you just remember that you finished it that night. She had set you off and you stormed up to the second floor for fresh air because you knew there was a balcony up there.
Except you stormed right into Benji.
You can't even remember what you two had talked about. It all gets blurred in the space around those five seconds it took you to realize that his mouth was on yours and yours was on his and you don't think you've ever run so fast in your life.
So, yeah, when the kid you got to follow him comes up with nothing you start to get a little worried. You don't know a lot about the guy. You have no idea if he's like Stella and he'll use this against you. That's why you don't know if you should just ignore him, because he might just go away. Maybe this whole thing will disappear a whole lot easier than you think. But life is never that simple.
You could threaten him, because money always talks, but that means actually acknowledging what happened. Showing how panicked you are about it is one hell of a blackmail card. You worry your bottom lip and feel like tearing your hair out.
It feels like you've been standing here for ages, lounging under the shade of a tree and watching him, probably just looking like you're waiting for Cleo or something.
Fuck, you don't even want to know what will happen if she finds out.
Maybe that's what finally gets you moving. You take long strides over to wear Benji's sitting, on a bench in the courtyard, holding your secrets in the palm of his hand. The slats of the bench dig in when you sit down beside him and you don't waste any time launching into your speech. You don't even look at him.
"Look." You start, keeping your head faced forwards, chest tight, "I'm going to make this quick and simple so you can get it through that thick skull of yours."
"You didn't see me at all over the summer, got it? Nothing happened. In fact, as far as you're concerned, we've never even spoken."
