She probably wasn't at the top of Lys' list of people to see when she got home and Babs knew that. She was okay with that for the most part except for the small problem of buzzing.
Shaking was maybe a better word for it, all morning, her hands had been shaking all morning and for the last few days. Ever since Lysander had stood there on the big screen in front of a dead girl. The whole square had been silent in shock and then everyone had screamed at once. The party had lasted days and Babylon had kind of just stood there, shaking.
"It's shock," her mom had said, "It'll go away."
It hadn't yet.
She'd waited a day since Lysander had finally rolled back into town for good. Of course she'd been with the crowd at the train station to see her but Babs wasn't very tall. It had been hard to see over people's heads and Lys had been so far away, just tiny and impossible on the platform.
Last night she lay in bed and tried to think about what to say to her when she saw her. It'd only been a couple of weeks since Lys had gone away but it somehow felt like months, as if there was a gaping canyon between them now. So much had happened to her best friend, stuff that Babs would never understand properly herself.
What if Lys was too different?
Babylon was full of doubt but it hadn't stopped her from waiting around Victor Village anyway where she was certain Lys would be. There was no way she'd go back to her house, not after everything.
In the end, she'd only had to wait twenty minutes before she heard a front door open and her best friend was in view. No one else was around at this hour and Babylon, usually so reserved, could not contain herself at seeing her whole and returned.
"LYS," she yelled before running at her full speed and leaping. Her legs found her waist and she locked her ankles together before leaning back with her arms around her best friend's neck. "You stupid bitch, I missed you so goddamn much, never ever do that again."
