FOOL ME ONCE, FOOL ME TWICE
Time feels like it's slipping away.
Nico doesn't know how else to describe it except that the years are starting to bleed together, the tributes starting to feel like they all happened at once and like they never happened at all. James Monaghan had come to him for the second time, grabbed him by the fucking lapels and tried to tell him that it was his job to get sponsorships, that he was in charge of bringing home the tributes, that he'd been failing at his job ever since he got it and that this was the last fucking straw the last chance. He tried to tell him that if he didn't bring Mona home, then he was going to kill Nico himself.
Nico wanted to see him try.
It wasn't that it never failed to amuse Nico when the tributes family tried to tell him that it was his job to bring their loved ones home, but... there was something unkind that it stirred in Nico's chest, something that he didn't really want to put a name to because he was terrified of whatever it was that it said about him. What it said about the kind of victor he was, like he was too broken now to really know or understand what it felt like to need someone to come back to him so desperately he'd be willing to kill for it.
Sitting on the couch across from Mona Wyatt, he wonders absently what it is she's done for the middle Monaghan that has him willing to show so much emotion. The only other time he had seen that had been when he cornered Nico outside the train after Juliet had been reaped. "So, who are you to Jamie then?" he asks bluntly.
Nico had never been any good at pulling his punches.
He was trying to learn, but if he was going to try to bring this girl home, he wanted to know whatever she was willing to tell him.
