The names had been pinned up on the board, her elegant cursive flowing smoothly and excitedly over paper. Killian and Victor had taken to the idea of the two individuals with some reluctance, some agreeance, some restraint. In the end it had made sense. The two needed to be tested and reminded of why they were in this household and the consequences of not impressing their masters.
The dress she wore was made of silk, lace netting running down the arms and a high collared feather neckpiece to match. It was crimson red, flowing like the blood that was going to be shed, as vibrant as the glee in her eyes. Her red lipstick matched; eyes ringed with coal as she gently placed on her large gold earrings. Her hair was bothersome, it hadn’t stayed the way she wanted even after a few hours of teasing and hoping it would hold. Alas, she might look the most dignified and stunning of the lot, but her hair would always disappoint her.
Evening air washed through the household as she made her way to the Arena. It stood in the backyard, tucked tightly away from prying eyes. Victor had already prepared the space, and she knew that part of him was hoping the kids would be useless and he could once again get his hands dirty. Octavia was hoping for a bloody and terrifying match that would inflict scathing reminders on the children that watched; she owned them.
Octavia didn’t spare the children a glance as she made her way to her seat. She sat in the middle, Killian flanking her on one side, Victor on the other. Starting this fight was always exciting, watching the children’s faces as they realised there was no escape. Fighting to the death was their only option.
The taste of blood had been missing from the house for too long. Meredith’s death was stale, the warning no longer sufficient to scare. She hated that they had grown comfortable, perhaps even a little complacent and she didn’t fear anyone finding out her secret now that was mayor. In fact, she was sure that most career parents would approve of it, even want to join in. They were the true careers, built from iron and carved from pain- they knew what it meant to be strong.
“Welcome, my darling children,” she stood, moving to the edge as her gaze trailed around the circle of kids. “Once again we are here as a reminder of what you’ve been chosen for. The children of this household must be stronger and better than any other career that has existed.”
She looked down into the Arena, contemptuous gaze resting on Linus for a brief moment before moving to Elijah. “Elijah and Linus have failed to stand up to that strength. To redeem themselves and earn another chance they will fight today- until one of them dies.”
Victor stood, swords in hand as he threw them into the Arena below. They landed with a dull thud, an echo- a beat of aching silence before the destruction would rage.
“You may begin.”
