Age: 12
Gender: Female
District/Area: 7
Appearance:
Sam is a small pale 12-year-old. She is 4’6 and weighs a mere 75 lbs. Although she lives in the lumber district, she has limited experience working in the forests and her lack of muscles show for it. Growing up poor means she is skinny, her ribs easily visible. The sharp bones in her face are dotted with faint brown freckles. They spread across her short round nose and under her warm brown eyes. She has a thin-lipped mouth which is normally in a smile. Sam likes to keep her hair in two braids, framing her face. Her light brown hair, which naturally lights a bit at the bottom, falls just below her shoulders when it is released from its braids. Sam is often misjudged for being younger than she really is. This doesn’t bother her though; there are perks to getting to stay younger for longer. Unfortunately, avoiding the games isn’t one of them.
Sam loves to wear comfy flowy clothes. She doesn’t have the privilege of owning many outfits, but her favourite is a simple white dress. The white is no longer crisp white due to it being old but that doesn’t bother her. Most of the time, Sam wears her older brother’s hand-me-downs- faded jeans with holes forming in the knees and a variety of knit sweaters to stay warm in the cold weather of District Seven.
Personality:
Just as Sam exudes the appearance of youthfulness, so does her personality. Her innocence is what keeps her happy in the misery of growing up poor. She is oblivious to many aspects of life that she does and will face in the future. Her father and brother have kept the harsh realities of their lives a secret from her, always trying to keep her the baby of the family. Her family is glad for her distraction. It brings them joy that she is happy where she is. Her innocence, though, means facing the realities of the games is something that won’t be easy for her. She has unknowingly, through the influence of her family, built up walls around herself that if tested by the games would crumble.
Sam is also sweet and fun-loving. She cares about others and their feelings. She knows the right words to say to distract them from their troubles and worries, and how to put a smile on their face. Although Sam isn’t loud and out-there, she is friends with all the other children her age. Her quiet kindness and constant smiles draws people in, in a world that is the opposite her. Sam is extroverted and it shows in her know-how of starting up a fun games to play in the woods with friends. In school Sam is the student to let others go first but when no one is willing to volunteer, will. Sam’s charisma comes from her actions and attitude towards life rather than her words. In the world of harsh words and unreasonable punishment against her community her joy for life shines a little brighter.
History:
Sam lives in a poor sector of District Seven near the lumber forests. She lives with her father and brother. They live together in a small, three-room red brick and oak plank house. Sam starts her days just as her father and brother are leaving for work. She eats the porridge that’s left for her and she cleans herself up for the day. She spends most of her day at school, where she receives the Capitol provided lunch. After school has finished up for the day, Sam splits her time between playing in the forests with her school friends and doing chores at home. She is responsible for cleaning the breakfast dishes, doing basic housework, and when it’s cold, starting a fire up for the evening. Sam does most of cleaning at home because her father and brother spend most of their days working for the Capitol. Her father does all the cooking though. Most evenings, the family spend whatever time they have together talking and relaxing.
Sam’s father, or Pop as she calls him, is a tall muscular man. He has cropped brown hair and stubble always dots his chin no matter how often he seems to shave. Pop is quiet and reserved but cares deeply for his children and strives to give them a happy life. He keeps a lot from his kids, particularly Sam, and he doesn’t speak about his past much. Sam’s favourite thing to hear is her Pop’s deep, hearty laugh at the end of the day. Pop works as a labourer for the Capitol. He starts work at sunrise; planting, maintaining, or cutting down trees. Whatever the Capitol demands of him.
Caleb is Sam’s older brother. He is 20 years old. He is very similar physically to his father but his personality is where they differ. Caleb loves to spend time with his friends and is very sociable. He spends his time at work chatting with others whenever the peacekeepers allow it. He works at a lumber processing plant. Caleb and Sam love to climb the old tall trees in the summer to spend time together.
One part of Sam’s life has always been a mystery to her; her mother. She grew up without her mother in her life. She knows very little about her but she assumes she must look like her because other than her eyes, which are her Pop’s, they don’t look very similar. Sam has tried countless times to learn more about her mother but whenever she asks, she is immediately shutdown by both her Pop and Caleb. Sam loves to fantasize about her mother, what she would look like, how she would act, and what they would do together if she were here.
Over the years, Sam has developed a number of skills that could prove useful if she was ever reaped. Although Sam has never trained for the purpose of the games, she does love to play games in the woods. This has led to an increased ability in agility and stealth. She isn’t known for her bravery though, and she refuses to play in the woods when it’s dark. Sam also knows a bit about knives. Gifted to her by her Pop, Sam owns a small knife which she uses to whittle small scrapes of woods. Overall, Sam’s greatest ability in the game would be to gain sponsors and allies. She won’t consciously do this though, but her small innocent demeaner and joy for life tends to draw others close to her.
