Trainers Tournament '87 | Round 1: Rin v Capulet

Lights, camera, action! The people of Panem were no strangers to watching combat on their television screens, but this year they'd have the pleasure of watching Capitolites battle it out for glory and status - just without the death!

The Plinth Munitions Annual Trainers Tournament, proudly brought to your screens by Fenwick Broadcasting Inc. would see the best of the Capitol's best go head to head for the honour of being crowned Head Trainer in the Capitol and the Career Districts. Fans from all over the country gathered around to watch the publicly broadcasted event, with some of the Capitol's elite and their friends taking seats on the bleachers in the Training Centre to watch the action right before their eyes. The High Council, of course, sat front and center to admire their handiwork or took to viewing the action behind the camera, putting their expertise in broadcasting to work. No rest for the wicked!

The question on everyone's mind was the same: Who would come out on top and be offered one of the most prestigious new jobs in the Capitol since the announcement of the High Council? Only time would tell.

Welcome to Round One, trainers! In this round, we'll be using hand to hand combat only! These rolls are: unarmed.

The rules are simple: Everyone starts at 25HP. First come, first post. You have 24 hours to complete your fights - if no trainer has reached 25HP, we will determine the winner based on current damages and activity. Blitz posts are encouraged for the sake of speed.

Ivan wasn't the talkative type during his fights. Too much chatter took away from the ability to concentrate and that wasn't what he needed right now. Therefore, he stayed silent. He had readied himself for this fight quite a bit in advance, but seeing as he didn't know who he'd be fighting until now, he couldn't be too particular in how he trained. That was important, though. In training, you wanted to be well-rounded, in his opinion, as you never knew who you could end up fighting in the end. He made sure those that he trained knew this, too.

As for now, he had to focus on the fight at hand, learning how his opponent moved and fought, all the while using the skills he already had to make sure he could take them down even if he didn't have time to learn how they functioned. The match started, he readied himself, and he swung his fist at his target. He was determined to connect with their body and take them down as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I could lie and say I'm not doing this for myself. I could say that it's just what is best for us, (my sister and I,) but the truth is that I am doing this for myself. I've worked hard. Too hard to go home empty handed. Too hard proving them all wrong, little girl whose Daddy wasn't rich enough to leave anything of note behind when he died. Little girl who was left with a littler sister who needed to be fed. Little girl who grew up and made something of herself.

It hasn't ever been about me, and I've been okay with it. I've had to be. But here, now? This is my shot to be great. To leave something behind. To finally stop worrying, and god damn it, to feel good about myself.

The boy they pair me with looks perfectly capable. Of course he is; he wouldn't be here if he wasn't. But it doesn't intimidate me until his knuckles are buried against my rib cage and, despite my protests, I groan against him, both hands catching his shoulders long enough to push him away from me.

He got the jump on me, and it's okay. I'll have him on his knees soon enough.

His fist hits the girl in the ribs, and when she swings back, she connects with his shin. The hit was definitely going to leave a bruise, but it certainly could've been worse, and it didn't really faze him at all. The expression on his face: concentrated. His mind: concentrated. He was all focus right now.

The girl seemed determined, too. She knew what she was doing. She wouldn't have been in this tournament if she were clueless. That was just a given fact. He wasn't intimidated though. It took a lot to intimidate him, and she wasn't to that level. He swung his fist at her again.

My foot catches him in the shin and for some reason he doesn't seem to respond. Okay, I think, maybe he had his nerves removed, or something. I'd felt the connection, felt the pressure. It was a move I'd done a thousand times, a move I'd been on the receiving side of one too many times as well. Was it the worst pain in the world, no. But to not react at all?

The thought crosses my mind that he might just be on something. It isn't unheard of; all sorts of people use performance-enhancing drugs. Those people, of course, ware the weakest of them all in the end. Everyone knows it, including them. That's why they do what they do: they aren't good enough without the help. I would do a lot of things to win, but I wouldn't dare sour my own name along the way. Not now, not ever.

I hiss as he mimics my movement and catches me in the thigh, his shoe hitting me just the right way so that it slides across the surface of my leg, pinching the skin. I wouldn't be surprised if I looked later and saw that it had been bleeding. Not the worst, of course. But I still feel it, and it is enough to try and make sure I don't feel it again.

He may not have been too afflicted by the first hit that his opponent made on him, but the next his that he made on her caused him to stumble a bit at he lost his balance just a little bit. Luckily, he managed to recover quickly. Shortly thereafter, however, she struck him again.

His arm had been hit, and it somehow hurt more than the first hit had. He'd barely been afflicted by the first attack she'd made on him, but this second one made him snap into reality. This was a fight.

He smirked. He was enjoying the adrenaline that was starting to pump. It was slowly getting more exciting. Ivan loved exciting fights. It's what he truly enjoyed. More than anything, he loved a challenge. This was going to get more and more interesting as it continued, he was sure, and therefore, more and more enjoyable.

Anger has always been the hardest emotion for me to subdue. Maybe because I have a lot to be angry about, who knows? I try. Genuinely. If for nothing else then at least for Cosima's sake. She lost her parents too, and was so much younger and more dependent than I; the least I can do is try to minimize the damage.

But, like I said, it's difficult. And sometimes the anger wins whatever game is going on in my head, and when he smiles it's like my anger has just whispered checkmate into my ear. I feel my cheeks begin to burn if they weren't already. My ears feel hot, my jaw sets and it is all I can do not to react to him. That's what he wants, right? I'm giving it to him regardless: he's already won on that front.

I'm pissed.

But, maybe to save my pride, I refuse to let myself react any further. Though, when I being to move again, the steps are quicker and the swings are more absolute and thoughtless and being reckless in situations like these is never a good thing, but I never said I didn't have a temper. It's hard to contain it when the target flashes his teeth at you and you've already been asked to punch them out of his mouth before he dared to smile in the first place.

Ivan's opponent seems almost emotionless now, but it's not normal. She's masking something but what is it? Pride? Frustration? Joy? He truly couldn't tell what it was. He'd never been the type who was good at reading people's emotions- just their actions.

He hit her in the back. Her next swing didn't connect with him. His pride was still in tact. He'd usually been the one to come out on top in fights, and he didn't want that to change. No, he still wanted that sweet taste of triumph. He wanted the wonderful feeling of victory. He wouldn't just give that up. No, he wasn't the type to do that.

Another swing of his was making its way towards his target just seconds later.

Maybe I can't get a good hit on him but I'm making damn sure he won't get one on me either. He dodges and swings and I do the same and I'm biting my bottom lip in frustration because I just want to beat him and I just want it to be done and I want it to be done right now. Deep breath in; even if I do win this fight, I want to do it with pride. Shit. I can't have them thinking I'm a lunatic even if I am.

Am I?

His fist sails past me and I get in close. He's bigger than me and stronger than me. That doesn't mean he's better than me. It can't. It won't. I won't let it. Not here and not now and not ever. Not when there's a better life waiting for me just outside this ring if I can just edge him out and move on.

Shit! he thinks to himself as his attack fails to connect, but he doesn't say it out loud. He'd lost his concentration for a moment, but he wasn't going to let it happen again. His opponent bruises his dominant hand, and he quickly pulls it back. He has to give this one a break.

This time, he swings with his left, hoping his decision was the right one.

He's fighting because he wants to win, but also because he wants to test himself. He wants to make sure that he truly is as skillful as he's always believed. Ivan wants to prove both to himself and to others that he really is capable.

He connects with my leg again and I scoff. It is now more about disappointing myself than it is losing. Or maybe they are supposed to be one and the same? Whatever. I hate losing. I hate being embarrassed. I hate being held responsible. I hate being watched like this. I hate feeling like I'm not good enough. I hate him. And I want him to know it. Out of the ring, he may be an alright guy, but when I raise my fists, I have to hate whatever it is I swing at. It's the only way it ever works.

He seems so cool, and collected, and calm, and absolutely fucking infuriating. I keep wondering if he'd be so smug if I could pinch his head off.

Gritted teeth, I strike. I don't hope. I demand.

Ivan hits her leg again but she manages to stay on her feet and swing back, connecting with his collarbone. He tries his best to ignore the pain from it, but there's definitely some present. He's getting frustrated. This is taking longer than he wanted it to. Regardless, he does seem to have a bit of a lead at the moment, so he's hoping that he can keep it.

People are watching- closely- but it doesn't bother him. He's not unnerved by an audience. He likes having an audience. It makes him feel adored and like he's doing something worth something. It gives him a rush, and he was going to use that rush to fight.

Here's the thing about having a broken jaw: Even if I wanted to scream, I wouldn't be able to. The entire left side of my head feels every type of pain from dull, to sharp, to throbbing. Even my teeth themselves ache. All I can do is mutter with my lips pressed tightly together because this isn't how this was supposed to go and I'm just-

I'm not done.

Anyone can climb when the weather is fine, but it takes heart to brave a storm. I won't stop until the bell rings. I won't stop until I walk out of this place a winner or unconscious, though as humiliating as it is, I am starting to think the former of the two seems more likely. My eyes are watering even without my permission, I can feel my face begin to swell, I am 85% certain I can taste blood. But I'm still standing.

Allegra's jaw breaks under the force of Ivan's fist, despite him having swung with his non-dominant hand. He supposes that must be due to the attempt he'd been making at balancing his strength, just in case he ever did have to use his left hand instead of his right. He still wanted to be able to land a sufficient punch, and he did just that.

Miss Capulet was clearly a determined individual, though. She kept pushing through, and struck Ivan's right wrist, bruising it like she had to his hand. He winced a bit in pain, but tried to push it off. If he could keep fighting with his left hand, he could do this. He could push through all of this and win.

He means to slam me down, I think. That's what I would've done: get them on the ground while they're distracted, while they're hurting, finish it before they have the opportunity to fight back. He manages to bring me to my knees and, yes, I'll admit it, if he'd pushed for an instant longer I would've toppled and it would've been game over. But give me a break- the only parts of my mouth that still have feeling are throbbing in pain. My balance isn't really my first priority, even if it should've been.

But he doesn't keep pushing, and so the fight goes on and I am not done yet- soon, I'm sure, but not yet. I feel blood pooling into my mouth and don't dare spit it out, don't dare swallow it either, so it just sits there in my mouth, staining my teeth and making me want to gag. Fight. It's all I can think: Fight, fight, fight.
