The light in the train car is weird. It keeps flashing, like the sunlight that filters in through the window keeps getting cut off, just over and over and over again. I had to close my eyes after a few minutes, because the constant flash was giving me a headache, but somehow it's rvrn worse from behind my eyelids. Like little mini fireworks every three seconds.
I think I'm nervous to meet everyone. My partner is a victor's sister, I know that, so that already ups her odds of survival. She'll probably be running circles around me, and so it'd probably be good for me to make conversation, but when I had listened to her at the Reaping, her voice was harsh enough to make me shy away.
But they still sit me beside her, Sutton Mae, and I just try to focus on the fireworks.
Her sister is even more intimidating, if that's possible, so is Patricia. What are they going to say when they meet the blind kid who volunteered to be their mentee?
The rumble of the train sounds angry and I think I agree.
But I want to be brave, and I want to be strong in a way I've never been before, so when the sound of footsteps finally clang against the floor I sit up a little straighter, stop wringing my hands and lift my chin. A shadow passes over the flickering window light and I listen to the sound of scraping chairs and clinking china.
Then it's quiet for a while, and I don't know if that's because they're all giving each other looks or because they're waiting for us to start. If Sutton and Lysander really are sisters, then I thought they'd take this chance to talk or strategize or something. Or maybe they want to do that in private, so people like me can't eavesdrop.
I start to pick at my nail bed again, the sound of the train getting suffocating. Pollux was always better than filling the silence than I was. Guess you don't really know social cues if you can't see them.
"So is this the part where we ask for advice?"
