"Why aren't you scared of me?
Why do you care for me?
When we all fall asleep,
where do we go."
He wanted Castor to talk.
They'd been walking across the dustbowl of the black mechanical giants for what felt like hours. The weather was neither here nor there, just a steady haze. Sin's mouth was dry and the few things they'd found along the way hadn't offered much help. He was starting to feel like their little treasures were useless.
Sin's hand was entwined with Castor's, their fingers locked together after sweat had pulled them apart for a moment. Castor didn't like it last time when he'd let go of his hand, so Sin tried not to anymore. After awhile, it didn't feel awkward anymore to be tethered like that.
But he'd never been needed before, only used, so it felt okay. Maybe it even felt a little good.
A few minutes into their walk, a flag had flapped in front of them, fabric tied loosely to one of the machines. Sin hadn't been able to read it but the square of fabric seemed useful anyway, so he'd taken that too.
Then they'd come across what must have used to be a work station, or set up to look like one. Guns sat in holsters on a little card table, gloves tosses haphazardly beside them as if someone had just gotten up and left their life behind. Sin had taken all of it and doled out matching items to Castor as well.
They'd been walking in silence since and usually, Sin liked that, not from Castor though. He liked his stories, and his little laugh when he thought he was being funny. He squeezed Castor's hand, a question in the movement. He didn't have anything for Castor, not yet, just images and feelings that he couldn't think of the descriptions for even if he tried.
He didn't notice the shining mountains looming in the distance until the first piece of glass was under his foot. Sin stopped walking for a moment, he'd never seen anything like it before. The entire area seemed to be reflective, even weak light refracted off the shining mountains.
The ground, which had only been a dusty sort of red for the last few hours, blended slowly into that same shining glassiness. To go forward, they'd have to walk on broken shards but one slip up would send them both down on top of it.
They couldn't turn around either, the oil wells held nothing for them. Sin didn't even know if they were going the right way to find their allies. It was hard to remember which direction the cornucopia had been in.
As he stood there, trying to decide what to do, the little device that his stylist had slipped into his pocket buzzed against his thigh. Sin reached around himself to pull the phone out without letting go of Castor, thumb clicking the little button that the stylist had shown him.
"text received from Lore - 'Sksksk where r u'"
Sin stared down at the little glowing screen until it went black. He had no idea what 'Eskay' meant.
