It was a dreary day when she woke up. So unlike the day before when the sun had beat down harsh enough to leave a faint redness on her this day. Alice, as she started every day, tied her hair up into an inelegant bun and got ready for the day in peace as the first one up in the household. Staring at her reflection in the mirror in the morning to get ready was the only time she permitted herself to see what she looked like. She didn't like what she saw in the mirror most days. The girl she was now was not the girl her father had died knowing. The girl she was now was not the girl Mauve died knowing. The girl she was now was full of blood and grit and fire and fight.
Alice walked into the empty kitchen and began to prepare food when her eleven-year-old brother bounded in with a happy smile on his face. I would do anything to keep that smile on his face, Alice thought to herself.
"Alice! Alice!" Tig shouted as he bounced on the tips of his toes. "Mom and Uncle Bryce are taking me out today!"
"Oh?" Alice asked trying to sound enthused, continuing to make breakfast for everyone. "That sounds exciting."
Tig continued to tell Alice excitedly how he was going to go exploring the District with their mother and uncle and how they were going to go shopping for new clothes and food. Alice nodded along and smiled at her little brother no matter how exhausting it felt to smile instead of snarl.
After everyone had eaten, Alice ventured outside to take her daily walk. Where she ended up generally was due to how her thoughts were leaning that day. It just so happened that she ended up at the town square and all her thoughts fell to the night that she lost her childhood innocence and her first friend.
She just didn't know she would gain a new friend that day with the person she had bumped into.
