NINA HART
"Goodnight, Hart," Doctor Arlott calls over his shoulder, giving me a wide grin as I shrug the strap of my bag over my shoulder. I give him a grin, waving at him as the heavy shining doors close behind me. I'd always thought him to be cute, gorgeous blonde hair, with green eyes that would sparkle with mischief when off duty. He had been a close mentor of mine for the past year. He had helped me through the explosions, helped me through losing my first patient. He was a fountain of knowledge, and he was always ready to sit down and share his wisdom. Maybe one day we might do it over coffee, and instead of medicine, we might talk about him.
The thought causes a giddy smile to pull back my lips, my cheeks flushing the colour of a rose. As if I would ever have the balls to ask him. Laughing to myself I make my way down to the ground floor, opting for the stairs instead of the elevator. It doesn't take me long, my steps echoing in the empty stairway. At the bottom I disarm the fire door temporarily before pushing it open enjoying the feeling of fresh air against my face. I take a deep breath, slipping my ID badge into my pocket.
It was a beautiful evening, the sun just kissing the horizon of the cloudless sky. Colours steamed from a shining orange orb, reds and yellows morphing into pinks and purples, fading to darkness as the moon readied to take its place. Summer was here, and I was just around the corner, the chill in the air fading into a soothing warmth. I had always enjoyed the warmer weather, the feeling of the sun against bare skin, rather than the kiss of ice.
A few uses nod at me, wishing me goodnight has they ready for night shift, I smile at them with plate greetings as I love down the path towards the markets. Dad would still be working, he was doing afternoon shifts this week and would not be home until the early hours of the morning. I had promised that I would make him is favourite, bangers and mash with a serving of gravy and peas. Angus enjoyed that meal too, though if he hadn't moved off his lazy ass in the last ten hours then he could cook his own damn meal.
I make a mental note of my shopping list, hands digging into my pocket to see how much cash dad had left me. He didn't need to leave me money, but he often insisted, encouraging me to place my earnings into a savings fund. I had been working as a nurse for the two years of my schooling, my father getting me an apprenticeship that would lead me into doing medicine in collage and becoming a doctor just like him.
And one day I would, maybe even exceed his and my own expectations.
