There's something to be said about being the youngest daughter in a family of over-achieving doctors. The youngest of four children, all of whom work actively with the shadiest crime family in Nine, effectively tying our name with theirs. Now and forever. It's expected that I follow in their footsteps, obviously. Not just expected, but demanded actually. Ilya and Arya, the eldest twins, both gave up their opportunities at normal lives and chose to pledge their life to the Martins. Probably because Arya loves trouble and Ilya is in love with Lena, the princess. Piper was easily convinced, despite all the work I'd put in during our former years. I tried so hard to nurture her creative side while our father kept forcing a scalpel in her hand, but ultimately, I failed. She enrolled in the Healer Academy this spring and in two years she'll graduate a full-fledged doctor just like the rest of them.  Another mender of criminals. Another healer of heathens.  Another Kingston indebted to a Martin. Listen, it's not that I don't think healing is a good vocation. It's selfless and kind to spend your life fixing up other people. But what I hate is who they do it for. Who our family makes a vow to serve. Like we're less than them. Like we're just servants. It makes me sick.  I'm supposed to fill out my application to the Academy this month. It's been sitting on the desk in my room for nearly three weeks and all I've managed to fill out is my name and age. Phoebe Kingston. Fifteen. And that's all I feel comfortable giving to them. The Martins. They don't deserve anything else from me. Not my education. Not my learned expertise. Not my hands. And most certainly not my life. That's mine and mine alone.  And I refuse to give it up.
