When I ran away from the Cornucopia, I wasn't really thinking. The fact that I was leaving Six and Evan behind hadn't really even crossed my mind. Now, after running away unscathed and the two of them catching up with me quite damaged, Evan helping Six move along, I felt that pang of guilt in my chest.
"I'm sorry," was the very first thing out of my mouth when I saw them. "I shouldn't have just left you guys. I just- I kinda freaked out when I saw people rushing in at each other like that and I just didn't think it was a good idea for me to try to fight them off to get stuff..."
I looked at the two of them apologetically. Then, I realized that Evan was still holding up Six. I should help them, I told myself.
"Here, I'll help," I said as I took Six from Evan's side and put the small boy's arm around me instead so that I could help hold him up. I thought of that time when Larry got hurt while we were playing football with out friends. He'd shattered his knee, and I'd had to help him up and off of the field, and I helped guide him back home, holding him up like I was doing for Six right now.
I could see how busted up Six's shin was. It didn't look good. I wanted to help him out, but in all honesty, I wasn't sure what to do quite yet. I didn't see any plants around that we could use for healing, or even eating for that matter. At least not yet. I truly hoped we'd find some of those later on.
I looked to Evan while I helped hold up Six.
"We should get moving," I said. "Staying here for too long probably isn't the best idea. I can hear other people around."
I hoped that he and Six would agree with what I said and that we would get out of there soon. I might not have always had the most common sense, but I was street smart, and my instincts told me we needed to get going before too many people migrated in our direction. I was sure that the cameras in the sky wanted to see how well we'd survive when we did have to fight all together, but I'd rather save that for another day.
