It was only when Fleur drove the blade into Bellamy’s chest that she recalled his name. Whether she’d heard it in passing or they’d made small talk back at the training center, she didn’t remember, but with this moment of clarity came the knowledge that she could now name at least two people she had caused irreparable harm to.
Moving the machete took a level of activity that Fleur was not used to, and even more so when it was embedded in layers of tissue. She felt almost lightheaded as she withdrew it from Bellamy’s skin, steel painted with blood and rainwater. In seconds, his partner had given up her fight, hauling the boy away as if he were weightless. Fleur and Thread had lived. Bellamy had not.
Her throat constricted, and she stared down at her machete for a moment longer before placing it behind her back. She’d done it — she managed to look someone in the eye as she confronted them, and she hadn’t hesitated when it came down to the lives of her chosen family and the lives of outsiders. Where Fleur expected to feel a burst of pride, she instead felt tendrils of dread creeping through her bones.
Rather than confront her conflicting emotions for what felt like the thousandth time in nowhere near as many weeks, Fleur knelt in the mud and began rummaging through the items Three had left behind. She thrust a handful of bandages behind her without looking, waving it back and forth. ”You’re gonna need these,” she said, voice quiet and shaky.
After a few moments of surveying, she finally rotated her head to look at her partner, eyebrows sloped upward.
”Do you want to explain what that was all about?” Fleur asked. ”Sorry to tell you to shut up, but I was under the impression you weren’t particularly upset about what happened to Stitch.”
