It's 'bout damn time they sent me out with the cart. It's not like Dustin was gon' do it. He don't even get up out of the damn parlor unless there's a steak for 'im. They weren't fully sure if they wanted to throw the cart into the fair, but I convinced em. It gives a little extra money. If we bring five flavors it'll give the customers sum' options, and then we can change em up every day. We'll keep the classics - the strawberry, chocolate, vanilla. The ones that people can go to if they can't decide between our two special flavors for the day. Ma and Pa took a second to think about it, but they said, "hell, why not?" and sent me away with the cart. I took Scoops too. Everyone loves a good cat. Maybe they'll come over for the cat and decide to grab a delicious bowl of ice cream in the process too.

Pa' said he'll let me choose the bonus flavors each day, so I went with my fav'rites. Tomorrow, Delilah can pick her fav'rites. And then Dustin, and then Ma' and Pa' can get in on the choices too.

What? You want to know what flavors I chose? That's for you to come on up 'n' find out!

So, as soon as we got the cart ready and stocked it with bowls and ice cream, I found myself pushin' it the cart. Who knew that a cart of ice cream was so damn heavy? I wish they woulda' told me how much this thing weighed. Scoops trotted alongside slowly for most of the trip, but even he got tired of walkin 'n hopped up on the surface and took a seat. Little bitch. Good thing he's the cute factor. I also bring a cute factor, but I'm lookin to attract some fellas' n' ladies, not customers. If you're eatin' what I'm scoopin.

After what felt like a damn cows' herd to the bonfire area, I set up camp. Ma' and Pa' gave me this chalkboard sign to write on, along with a few tables to get myself organized before the wave of hungry ice cream lovers attack. A few minutes pass, and I got myself all ready to serve some scoops up.

Not the cat. The ice cream, duh.

Ring, ring! I knew that damn bell would be useful at some point. "Anyone want some ice cream? All ya' need is a hungry stomach and a mouth!" I place my hands on my hips and look out into the crowd - hopin that there's a body that wants fed. "Or a cat to pet. We have that too." Mrow. Thanks, Scoops! I knew he was born to act.

Why was the thought of ice cream the first thing to make me smile since we had arrived in District Ten?

I loathed the idea of coming here. My parents said it would be good for us all, to round us up and get us out of the house and go on a small vacation. Why? To just forget about Six? It seemed I was the only one who was opposed to the idea. All the kids were running around, making new memories. Yet all I could think about was about how Six would've loved to be here. How he would've crushed all of the events, how he would blow the District away with how kind and gentle-hearted he was.

But as I approached the ice cream booth, my thoughts quickly diverted to how much I was salivating at the idea of mint chocolate ice cream melting in my mouth. A small grin washed over my face as I approached the ice cream booth, still eyeing the delicious sight of the mint chocolate chip ice cream.

"Hi!" I greeted, although my eyes did not leave the clear glass enclosure that hid all of the magical ice cream flavours, "uh, could I have... a waffle cone of mint chocolate chip please?"

Maybe coming to District Ten wasn't so bad after all.

There's something about ice cream that makes people happier. Maybe it's the sweetness of every lick, bringing your mouth to focus on a different flavor than the bitter emotion they're feeling. Or maybe it's the coldness of it - how it allows your body to cool down. It slows down the rapid, flowing blood cells dashing through your body and allows it to take a second. Ice cream could also be a sense of nostalgia for a lot of people. The feeling of an icecream cone to hold onto and the sweetness brings back memories to their childhood. Maybe it was something that their families could do together, and now some of that family has broken off. Nonetheless, I'm happy to provide that happiness for people! That's what I'm here for. Smiles!

Shortly after the announcement, the first customer made his way to my fancy little booth. A smile on his face, a good sign already, and his eyes directly on one of the specialty flavors. I knew the mint chocolate chip was a good idea to bring! Sure, it's one of our best flavors, but we've gotta start off strong! That way they can keep on comin' back each day to see what flavors we got served up.

The excited fella spoke up although his eyes didn't leave the glass. "Hi!" Gosh, I love seein' an excited face. "Uh, could I have... a waffle cone of mint chocolate chip please?" Ooh, a cone fan too! Even better. "Hey there!" My voice as radiant as ever, the true service voice. "Sure ya can!" I let out a grin as I grabbed the ice cream scooper. "I'm a fan of the mint chocolate chip myself, so good choice." I carefully scooped out the first one, getting it inside the cone and neatly placing the other one on top. Following that, I grabbed a napkin to put around the cone. It's still a bit warm out, so sticky hands from melted ice cream ain't no joke! "Luckily, we don't have a cash register, so you can pay us via cat pets." I gestured down to Scoops as he was now on the ground. We don't need someone to find a stray piece of orange hair in their strawberry ice cream! Even if it's the damn cats, my hair is orange too, so I don't need that complaint.

"Really? This is free?" I exclaimed, as I waste no time bending down and pet the cat. It purred gently against my touch, resting its cheeks into my cupped palms. I smiled gently at the boy above me, at his kindness. For the first time since I had watched Six's death on the television, I had felt the genuine kindness of a stranger that hadn't been laced with sympathy and grief. It was a warm and nice feeling.

I stood back up and grabbed the ice cream from the vendor. The sickly sweet smell entered my senses as I took my first bite, diving deep into the sweet but slightly spiced taste of mint chocolate chip. The flavors burst through me and I couldn't help but widen my eyes between the cold temperature and the mouthwatering taste of the ice cream.

Yeah, I could get used to this.

"This is amazing! Thank you," I offered him, still warmed by his gratitude. "Do you make this yourself? This is awesome. Are you local?"

I couldn't remember the last time I had wanted to be so social, but I was thankful for whatever the boy had put into the ice cream to help me get through this vacation.

The fellow ginger wasted no time in leaning down and giving Scoops a pat on the head. "Really? This is free?" Voice heightened and stretched, the excitement that vibrated from his throat was enough to prove worthy of my goal. I'm glad I had this happen, because nothing's better than givin' a good smile. He gave me a light smile, and somehow, I could feel that this was needed. It's a rough world, and I don't know this boy. Maybe he was hurting, maybe he still is hurting. That's why I love doing this type of stuff. Giving people a reason to smile is the reason I've liked the parlor business.

He takes the ice cream from me and gives it a lick, the immense burst of minty flavour causing him to widen his eyes. Like he was provided the most powerful secret in the world. But it was a powerful secret. The secret of delicious ice cream to brighten his day! "This is amazing!" I mean, I already knew that, but it's still nice to hear. "Thank you." No need to thank me. I'm happy to serve. "Do you make this yourself? This is awesome. Are you local?" Wow, oh wow! So many questions.

"Yeah! My family and I run a parlor here in Ten." My pearly white smile beaming with pride of our treat. "We have the help of my other family's cow farm to provide us with dairy and then we make the rest from there." I give a nod to the five bins of ice cream in front of me, smile still wide. "All of it, homemade. It's the one thing about home that makes me proud of it." If there was anything that were to hurt me, being reaped, it'd be leaving the parlor. Not having Scoops to leap up onto my bed to go downstairs and open on up. That morning routine when the sun is early and I can barely see light peering over, but when the business is family only, we've gotta start early and end late when setting up.

Home. Home is what I'll miss. I wonder if he misses anything about his home.

There’s nothing quite like being transported back in time.

That’s how it feels walking inside the ice cream parlor, all pastel colours and neon lights overhead. It’s something straight out of a movie, which only makes me think about the days I still found myself being entertained by the moving pictures on my television screen. Days long gone, now that I’m older, perhaps wiser. Definitely hardened.

The specialty flavours of the day are advertised in big, bright letters on the store front. It’s the main reason I’d even heard about the store in the first place. Word had been passed around Ten of the small ice cream shop and their new daily flavours. I can see the appeal, truthfully. There’s a certain mystery about all that keeps people coming back, just to see what the new day will bring. It’s like being welcomed into a secret club.

But I’m not so easily fooled. My resolve is ever steadfast and unwavering. Don’t let yourself be sidetracked. If word is spreading, that means there’s people around to spread the word.

Where there’s people, there’s secrets waiting to be uncovered.

“Hi there,” I murmur quietly as I approach the counter. “I’ll get a scoop of vanilla, please.” I stare at the boy in front of me, trying to keep my voice light and casual, before letting my eyes drift over the interior. The store isn’t quite so busy just yet, with only one other kid stood by the counter, which might be both a blessing and a curse. I clear my throat gently, carefully contemplating my next words, although I’m sure I’m not the first person to walk through this door looking for gossip.

“The fair must be good for business. Seeing a lot more people than usual?”
