Volcanic Dunes

The ground reaches up to greet you before sloping down again. The entire area is covered in these gentle hills, each one crowned with brilliant bright red. Red as the sunset, red as blood. Trees dot the landscape but provide little in the way of cover or shade. The life has been scorched out of them, their branches charred and black and their leaves a long lost memory. It’s beautiful, but open and difficult terrain. Volcanic ash blows in the breeze, filling your mouth and dusting your hair. Plants and animals unable to escape lava flow from centuries prior reach up through the ground like jagged bones, coated in a dark layer of hard stone and topped with red as if painted by an artist. Enjoy the view, but don’t stay too long. (credit: sbeeg)
